The amount of earnings from Korean cultural content dipped for the first time in 27 months amid deteriorating Korea-China relations. K-content may stagger in foreign markets under a global economic slowdown, but will continue to grow in the long run, experts say.

한-중 관계가 악화하는 가운데 한국 문화 콘텐트로 벌어들인 수익이 27개월 만에 처음으로 감소했다. K콘텐트는 글로벌 경기둔화로 해외 시장에서 주춤할 수 있지만 장기적으로는 계속 성장할 것이라고 전문가들은 말한다.

Korea’s income from services related to music and video content in April stood at $122.7 million, down 20 percent on year, according to Bank of Korea data. It was the first time Hallyu income dropped on year since January 2021. Hallyu — or the "Korean Wave" — refers to the popularity of Korean pop culture content in overseas markets.

한국은행에 따르면 한국의 지난 4월 (해외에서) 벌어들인 음향과 영상 관련 서비스 수익은 1억2270만달러로 지난 해 같은 달보다 20% 감소했다.‘한류 수입’이 전년 동월 대비 감소한 것은 2021년 1월 이후 처음이다. 한류란 해외에서의 한국 대중 문화 콘텐트 인기를 말한다.

In contrast, Korea’s expenditure on foreign content rose 243.1 percent on year to $89.2 million in April. Shrinking earnings and growing spending cut Korean content’s trade balance and pared the surplus earned last year.

반대로 한국이 외국 콘텐트에 지출한 비용은 지난 4월8920만 달러로 243.1% 증가했다. 수익을 줄고 지출은 늘면서 한국의 콘텐트 무역 수지는 감소했고, 흑자폭은 축소됐다.

K-content surplus reached an all-time high of $492.1 million in the fourth quarter last year but halved to $244.1 million in the following quarter.

K콘텐트 흑자는 지난해 4분기 4억9210만 달러로 사상 최고치를 기록했지만, 올 1분기 흑자 폭은 그 절반 수준인 2억 4410만 달러로 감소했다.

Experts say the Korean Wave lost some of its force due to the recent economic slump. “Much content was either delayed or called off, and some parts of the industry saw the decline as a crisis,” said Lee Sungmin, a media arts professor at Korea National Open University. The base effect of high online sales that replaced offline ticket sales during the pandemic may have played a role in this year’s plunge, according to Lee.

전문가들은 한류가 최근 경기 침체 때문에 일부 동력을 잃었다고 말한다. 이성민 한국방송통신대 미디어영상학과 교수는 “경기 침체 영향으로 여러 콘텐트 제작이 지연되거나 취소되는 사례가 많았다”며 “업계에서는 위기라는 인식도 일부 있다”고 말했다. 그는 코로나19 기간 동안 오프라인 공연의 대체재로 높은 온라인 매출을 올려온 기저효과가 작용했을 수 있다고 말했다.

Hit films and dramas such as “Parasite” (2019), “Squid Game” (2021) and “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” (2022) have been spearheading made-in-Korea productions lately.

2019년 영화 ‘기생충’, 2021년 ‘오징어 게임’ 2022년 ‘이상한 변호사 우영우’ 등 인기 영화와 드라마는 최근 한류를 이끌어 왔다.

“The local movie industry failing to land additional wins accounted for the downturn,” said Koo Ja-hyun, director of the global economy office at the Korea Development Institute (KDI). “BTS, Blackpink and New Jeans led the K-pop industry, but foreign-made films topped the box office here in the first and second quarter this year,” Koo added.

구자현 한국개발연구원(KDI) 글로벌경제실장은 “국내 영화 산업이 잠시 주춤한 영향일 수 있다”며 “K팝 산업은 BTS, 블랙핑크, 뉴진스 등의 활동이 활발했지만, 영화는 1~2분기 외국 작품이 흥행한 경우가 많았다”고 말했다.

Korea-China relations act as a variable for K-culture earnings going forward. The Chinese government in 2016 prohibited broadcasts of productions made in Korea and ads starring Korean celebrities to retaliate against the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile system. Hallyu's surplus nosedived following the ban from $520 million in 2016 to $220 million in 2020.

한국와 중국의 관계도 앞으로 한류 수지에 변수로 작용한다. 지난 2016년 주한미국의 고고도미사일방어체계(사드) 배치 결정 이후 중국이 내린 한한령은 한류 수지에 악영향을 미쳤다. 2016년 5억2000만달러였던 한류 수지는 2020년 2억200만 달러로 급락했다.

BTS’s Suga told fans during a live broadcast on June 11 that he would very much like to go meet fans in China, but Korean singers are unable to perform there. Seoul and Beijing have been engaging in a diplomatic feud over where Korea stands in the U.S.-China rivalry.

BTS 멤버 슈가는 지난 6월 11일 한 라이브 방송에서 중국에서 팬들을 정말 만나고 싶은데 한국 가수가 중국에서 공연할 수 있는 방법이 없다고 말했다. 한국과 중국은 미국과 중국의 경쟁 관계에서 한국의 입장과 관련해 외교적 마찰을 빚고 있다.

Despite such uncertainties ahead, Hallyu may crest again on the back of K-pop’s popularity and anticipated works like season two of “Squid Game” currently under production.

불확실성에도 불구하고 한류는 K팝의 인기와 제작중인 오징어게임2 등 기대작들로 인해 다시 인기를 얻을 수 있을 것이다.

“It’s a stretch to say that Hallyu has subsided,” saidKDI’s global economy director. The key to the future of Korea’s cultural industry is creating new, original content as it has done in the past, according to Koo.
