Tongyeong City Hall [TONGYEONG CITY]

Fourth-year university students in Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang, will be eligible for scholarships from the city government, with the benefit being offered to all students in the future.

Students will get different amounts of scholarships depending on how long they lived in Tongyeong, according to the city on Thursday.

Those born in the city and living there until university will get a full scholarship. Those who weren't born in the city but moved to attend university will be given 30 percent of their tuition.

Foreigners can also apply.

At least one of the student's parents or grandparents need to live in the city to qualify for the scholarship.

Applications for the scholarship will open in early October, with the scholarship given to the students around the end of December.

Although only seniors can apply for the scholarship now, the city plans to expand the program to all university students, starting from junior year students in 2024, sophomore students in 2025 and all students by 2026.

"Only people can revive a city, and fostering future talent is a very important agenda for Tongyeong's sustainable growth," Tongyeong Mayor Chun Young-gee said.

"By making big investments into our future generation, we expect to attract more people to the city, support local talent and revive the city's economy."
