Merck Korea announced two winners of its annual Merck Award on Thursday during the International Meeting of Information Displays (IMID) 2023 held at Bexco in Busan.

The Merck Award celebrates its 20th anniversary this year and was established by IMID to commemorate display experts' achievements.

Prof. Jeong Jae-kyeong of Hanyang University won the top honor, the Merck award, for his contributions to the mass production of AMOLED products based on oxide semiconductor technology. He developed the world’s first 12.1-inch WXGA AMOLED notebook based on oxide thin-film transistors.

“It is a tremendous honor for me to receive the prestigious Merck Award, recognized as the highest accolade in the display field,” Jeong said. “Moving forward, my dedication to researching future display backplane technologies remains steadfast. By doing so, I aim to ensure the sustained prosperity of our domestic display industry.”

Prof. Kwak Jeong-hun of Seoul National University won the Merck Young Scientist Award for his dedication to the development of device structures for high-performance quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QLED). Kwak developed the first inverted QLED structure in 2012, which has greatly improved the efficiency and lifetime of QLEDs.

“Displays will become even more embedded in our daily lives, optimizing spaces and objects,” Merck Korea managing director Kim Woo-kyu said. “Converging with other industries will particularly accelerate the creation of new display markets.”
