Breakdancing, which was approved as an Olympic sport in 2020 and is set to make its debut at the Paris Games next year, has been cut from Los Angeles 2028, The Guardian exclusively reported on Monday.

지난 2020년 올림픽 종목으로 채택되고 내년 파리 올림픽에 처음으로 등장하는 브레이크댄스가 2028년 로스앤젤레스 올림픽에서 제외되었다고 지난 월요일(9일) 영국 매체 가디언이 보도했다.

The Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) Organizing Committee confirmed the news in a statement later Monday, announcing its intention to petition for the inclusion of baseball/softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse and squash as it meets the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at its 141st session in Mumbai, India early next week.

LA 올림픽 조직위원회는 이후 월요일 발표한 성명서에서 내주 초 인도 뭄바이에서 열리는 국제올림픽위원회(IOC)와의 141번째 회의에서 야구, 소프트볼, 크리켓, 플래그 풋볼, 라크로스 및 스쿼시를 올림픽 종목으로 포함하도록 청원서를 제출할 계획이라고 발표했다.

The announcement comes as breakdancing made its medal sport debut at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, which wrapped up over the weekend. A total of 45 B-boys and B-girls — the formal term used to refer to breakdancers — competed across the men’s and women’s competitions.

해당 발표는 지난주(10월 첫째 주) 중국 항저우에서 끝난 아시안게임에서 브레이킹 댄스가 정식 종목으로 처음 등장한 뒤 이루어졌다. 총 45명의 비보이와 비걸(브레이크 댄서들을 지칭하는 정식 용어)들이 남·여 종목에서 경쟁한 바 있다.

Three of Monday’s newly announced sports — flag football, lacrosse and squash — would make their Olympic debuts, and The Guardian reports that all three are set to be accepted.

월요일 새롭게 발표된 세 가지 종목(플래그 풋볼, 라크로스 및 스쿼시)은 올림픽에 새롭게 등장할 것이며 세 종목 모두 정식 종목으로 승인받을 준비가 됐다고 가디언이 보도했다.

Baseball and softball were medal sports at the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympics following a five-Game baseball run between 1992 and 2008, with softball beginning in 1996 before both were dropped for the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

야구와 소프트볼은 (1년) 연기되었던 2020 도쿄 올림픽에서 정식 종목이었다. 야구는 1992년부터 2008년까지 다섯 번의 올림픽 동안 정식 종목이었고 소프트볼은 1996년부터 정식 종목이었으나 두 종목 모두 2012, 2016년 올림픽에서는 제외됐다.

The last time cricket was featured at an Olympic Games was in 1900, in Paris, when it was included as part of the World’s Fair.

Cricket is, by some estimates, the second-most popular sport in the world after football, thanks to its immense popularity in countries like India, Pakistan, Britain and Australia. The version competed at the Olympics would be Twenty20, a fast-paced edition of the game that is considerably more appropriate for the multi-sport tournament format than the traditional days-long Test format.

일부 추정치에 의하면 크리켓은 축구 다음으로 세계에서 두 번째로 인기 있는 스포츠이다. 이는 인도, 파키스탄, 영국 및 호주 등과 같은 나라에서 크리켓이 매우 인기 있는 종목이기 때문이다. 지난 올림픽에서 선보였던 크리켓은 빨리 진행되는 T20 경기로 며칠이나 걸리는 전통적인 테스트 크리켓보다 종합 스포츠 대회 방식에 훨씬 적합한 유형이다.
