Netflix will charge an additional 5,000 won ($3.73) for sharing an account in Korea. Other local streaming providers are also set to raise subscription fees.

앞으로 넷플릭스 계정을 다른 사람과 공유하려면 추가로 5000원을 내야하게 됐다. 다른 국내 스트리밍 서비스들도 구독료를 올릴 예정이다.

The U.S. streaming giant announced the decision on its website on Thursday. It made similar announcements in other countries this year. In comparison, users in the United States pay $7.99 for each extra member per month.

넷플릭스는 목요일(11월 2일) 자사 홈페이지에 이같은 결정을 공지했다. 올해 다른 나라에서도 비슷한 발표가 있었다. 미국 소비자들은 매달 추가 한명 당 7.99달러를 내야한다.

Netflix restricts account sharing to people who live together in one household. “Account owners can buy an extra member slot and invite people outside their household to use Netflix,” the company's website reads.

넷플릭스는 계정 공유의 대상을 한 가구의 구성원으로 제한한다. 넷플릭스는 웹사이트에서 “계정 소유자는 추가 공유 멤버를 위한 슬롯을 사서 가구원이 아닌 사람에게 넷플릭스를 이용할 수 있도록 초대할 수 있다”고 밝혔다.

Members who share Wi-Fi under the same roof are considered to be a part of a household. Members who live separately and do not share the account owner's Wi-Fi (based on their registered IP address and internet usage) are not considered to be a part of the same household, and must either register as additional users or make a separate account.

한 집에서 와이파이를 공유하는 멤버들은 가구원으로 인정된다. 따로 살고 계정 소유자의 와이파이를 공유하지 않는 사람들은 같은 가구원으로 인정되지 않으며 추가 이용자로 등록하거나 별도 계정을 만들어야 한다.

Netflix will send out emails notifying account sharers of the platform's new policy.

넷플릭스는 새로운 정책을 알리는 이메일을 계정 공유자들에게 보낼 예정이다.

Access restrictions will roll out gradually. If users or outside devices that do not share the same residence as their account owner try to access their account, a notification will pop up.

접근 제한은 점진적으로 시작될 예정이다. 만약 계정 소유자와 거주지가 다른 이용자들이나 외부 기기가 이 계정을 이용하려고 하면 공지가 뜰 것이다.

Premium subscription plan subscribers can add up to two extra members and standard plan subscribers can add 1 extra member. The standard plan currently costs 1,3500 won per month and the premium plan costs 17,000 won. The standard plan with ads and the basic plan do not allow for extra members.

프리미엄 플랜 구독자들은 2명의 별도 멤버를 추가할 수 있고 스탠다드 플랜 구독자들은 1명의 별도 멤버를 추가할 수 있다. 현재 스탠다드 플랜은 월 1만3500원, 프리미엄 플랜은 1만7000원이다. 광고가 있는 스탠다드 플랜과 베이직 플랜은 별도 이용자를 허용하지 않는다.

The same policy has been implemented for Netflix users in most countries in North and South America, Europe, and other Asian countries. Before rolling out in Korea, the policy was enacted in Canada, Portugal, New Zealand, and Spain in February, and was expanded to around 100 other countries in May.

Domestic streaming platform Tving will also roll out new prices and subscription plans, with price increases starting in December.

국내 스트리밍 플랫폼인 티빙 역시 오는 12월 이용료를 높일 예정이며, 새로운 구독 플랜을 선보일 계획이다.

Tving announced Tuesday that basic subscription plan prices will increase by 20.3 percent from 7,900 won to 9,500 won. Standard plans will increase from 10,900 won to 13,500 won, a jump of 23.9 percent, and premium plans will increase 22.3 percent from 13,900 won to 17,000 won.Tving's price hikes are the first to come from a domestic streaming platform, and are expected to influence the subscription strategies of other domestic platforms such as Wavve and Watcha.

티빙은 화요일 베이직 구독 플랜 가격은 7900원에서 9500원으로 20.3% 인상할 예정이라고 밝혔다. 스탠다드 플랜은 1만900원에서 1만3500원으로 23.9% 인상되고, 프리미엄 플랜은 1만3900원에서 1만7000원으로 22.3%가 오른다. 티빙의 가격 인상은 국내 스트리밍 플랫폼 가운데 처음이며 웨이브나 왓차 등 다른 국내 플래폼의 구독료 정책에 영향을 줄 것으로 보인다.

Overseas businesses — including Netflix, Disney+ and Apple TV+ — raised their prices by 20 to 40 percent starting last year, creating the term “streamflation” to describe the rising prices of streaming services amid fierce competition for subscribers.

넷플릭스, 디즈니플러스, 애플TV 등 해외 서비스들은 치열한 구독자 유치 경쟁을 벌이는 가운데 지난해부터 구독료를 20~40% 인상하며 ‘스트림플레이션’이라는 용어까지 만들어 졌다.

“As supply costs increase due to content acquisition and higher production costs, the situation calls for an increase in subscription prices,” said an anonymous employee in the streaming industry.

업계 한 관계자는 “콘텐트 확보와 높은 제작비용 때문에 공급 비용이 상승함에 따라 구독료 인상이 불가피해졌다”고 말했다.
