Korea JoongAng Daily ombudsmen Ryu Kwon-ha, left, and Park Hye-min [KAVKAS; PARK HYE-MIN]

The Korea JoongAng Daily on Wednesday appointed Ryu Kwon-ha and Park Hye-min as the company’s new external and internal ombudsmen.

Ryu, the new external ombudsman, is a professor in the Department of Journalism & Mass Communication at Jeonbuk National University, an honorary consul of Hungary and advisor to Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A former president of the Korea Foreign Language Newspaper Association, Ryu is an expert in foreign language media in Korea.

Park, re-appointed as internal ombudsman, is director of newsroom administration at the JoongAng Ilbo, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, and the former managing editor and business desk chief at the Korea JoongAng Daily.

In a media company, an ombudsman handles complaints related to coverage or a failure to meet editorial standards. Holders of the position are independent of the newsroom and attempt to resolve all disputes from an impartial position.

The appointment of two new ombudsmen underscores our commitment to providing accurate, trustworthy news whilst ensuring that we can be held to account by our readers, Korea JoongAng Daily Executive Editor Choi Ji-young said.

Ombudsman are appointed for two years in accordance with Article 6 of Korea’s Media Arbitration and Damage Relief Act.
