'12.12: The Day' producers will continue story with new film, 'YS Project'

The creators behind “12.12: The Day,” which had garnered 12.8 million viewers as of Thursday, will continue the story with another film on the disbandment of Hanahoe.

Hive Media Corp, the production company that made the historical film “12.12: The Day” directed by Kim Sung-su, is in the works to produce a film called “YS Project” (working title), which tells the story of former president Kim Young-sam disbanding the military organization called Hanahoe.

Hanahoe refers to the unofficial private society of military officers led by Chun Doo Hwan who instigated a coup d’état on Dec. 12, 1979. The military mutiny led to the May 17 coup the following year and the tragic May 18th Gwangju Democratization Movement.

President Kim, who took office as the 14th president of Korea in February 1993, began to dismantle Hanahoe and remove those involved from power.

“YS Project” will dramatize the unknown story of the Kim government and the fall of Hanahoe.

The film's script is currently in the works with screenwriter Hong In-pyo who wrote the screenplay for “12.12: The Day” discussing various options with Hive Media Corp.

“’YS Project’ is one of the many works in progress at our company,” a spokesperson for Hive Media Corp told the Korea JoongAng Daily Thursday.

Starring actors Hwang Jung-min, Jung Woo-sung, Lee Sung-min, Park Hae-joon and Kim Sung-kyun, “12.12: The Day” was one of the only two films from last year that managed to hit the 10 million mark. It has also grossed more than $1 million in North America.
