A moon-shaped tethered balloon ride will light up the skies of Yeouido in June, according to the Seoul Metropolitan Government on Wednesday.

오는 6월 보름달 모양의 계류식 기구가 여의도의 하늘을 밝힐 예정이라고 서울시가 수요일(2월 28일) 발표했다.

The balloon, filled with helium gas, will float up to 150 meters (492 feet).

헬륨 가스로 채워진 기구는 150m(492피트) 상공을 날게 된다.

The 15-minute-long ride can carry 30 passengers. The grass field in Yeouido Park in western Seoul will host the attraction.

비행시간은 15분이며 탑승객 30명을 태울 수 있다. 서울 서쪽 녹지로 가득한 여의도공원에 이 명물이 설치될 예정이다.

The city revealed the ride’s design and detailed operational plan on Wednesday.

서울시는 이날 기구의 디자인과 상세한 운영계획을 공개했다.

The balloon will have the city’s slogan “Seoul, My Soul” across it with decorative elements like a smile and a heart.

기구엔 서울시의 슬로건인 ‘서울, 마이 소울’과 웃음 표시와 하트와 같은 장식적 요소가 함께 담긴다.

Despite its resemblance to a hot air balloon, the ride cannot move horizontally as the cable cord will just connect the balloon and the ground below it.

resemblance : 유사성
horizontally : 수평으로, 가로로

언뜻 열기구와 유사해보이지만 이 기구는 수평으로는 움직일 수 없다. 땅과 연결된 케이블에 고정돼 있기 때문이다.

Helium gas, a non-flammable and non-explosive substance, will make the ride safer than hot air balloons. The attraction will also not cause noise and pollution, the city government said.

헬륨가스는 불활성·비인화성 물질이다. 폭발성이 없어 비행이 열기구보다 안전하고 소음과 공해도 없다고 시는 설명했다.

Tethered balloons can be found worldwide, such as at Disneyland in Paris and Walt Disney World in Orlando.

계류식 기구는 프랑스 파리 디즈니랜드, 미국 올랜도 디즈니월드 등 세계 곳곳에서 볼 수 있다.

The city authority chose to use a tethered balloon called Aero30ng, produced by French manufacturer Aerophile. The craft is certified by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency for its quality and safety. It consists of an engine for emergencies and connecting cables with a resistance of 45 tons (99,000 lbs).

시 당국은 프랑스 업체 에어로필(Aerophile)의 계류기구인 에어로30엔지(Aero30ng) 기종을 선택했다. 이 기종은 유럽연합항공안전청(EASA)의 품질 및 안전성 인증을 받았다. 이 기구는 비상정지 모터와 인장력 45t(9만9000 파운드)의 연결케이블 등으로 구성돼 있다.

The city started the design and production of the ride last month and aims to finish the installation by June.

서울시는 디자인과 제작을 지난달 시작해 설치물을 6월께 끝내는 것을 목표로 한다.

The authority will conduct a safety check over a week-long pilot period. The full operation is slated to begin around late June after considering weather situations such as heavy rainfall in summer and typhoons.

pilot period : 시범 운영 기간

시는 일주일 이상 시범 운영 기간을 통해 안전성을 검증하고, 본격 운영은 장마·태풍 등 기상 상황을 종합적으로 고려해 6월 말부터 시작할 예정이다.

The city plans to operate the ride every Tuesday to Sunday between 12 p.m. and 10 p.m. Mondays will be reserved for regular maintenance.

서울시는 화~일요일 낮 12시부터 오후 10시까지 운영할 계획이다. 매주 월요일에는 정기점검을 위해 쉰다.
