South Korea, Japan and China will hold a long-stalled trilateral summit in Seoul on Monday, a meeting expected to serve as a stepping stone towards normalization of relations between the three Northeast Asian neighbors.

한국, 일본 그리고 중국이 오랫동안 지연된 3자 정상회의를 오는 월요일 (5월 27일) 서울에서 개최한다. 이번 만남은 동북아 3국의 관계 정상화의 발판이 될 것으로 기대된다.

President Yoon Suk Yeol will host the threeway meeting, the first of its kind in four years and five months, inviting Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Chinese Premier Li Qiang to the country for a two-day visit from Sunday, the presidential office announced Thursday. Korea is the current rotating chair.

윤석열 대통령은 기시다 후미오 일본 총리와 리창 중국 총리를 1박 2일 간 한국으로 초청해 4년 5개월 만에 3자 대면을 주최한다고 대통령실이 목요일 밝혔다. 이번엔 한국이 돌아가며 맡는 의장국을 할 차례다.

“This summit will serve as a turning point for Korea, Japan and China to fully restore and normalize our trilateral cooperative system,” Kim Tae-hyo, principal deputy national security adviser, said in a press briefing at the Yongsan presidential office.

김태효 국가안보실 1차장은 용산 대통령실 브리핑에서 “이번 정상회의는 한일중이 3국 협력 체제를 완전히 복원하고 정상화하는 전환점이 될 것”이라고 말했다.

The leaders are expected to issue a joint declaration afterwards to demonstrate their intent to pursue such cooperation. This statement is expected to lead discussions in lower-level consultative bodies and future cooperative projects among the three countries.

정상들은 3국의 협력 의지를 보여주는 공동선언을 발표할 예정이다. 이번 발표는 앞으로 3국 간 각급 별 협의체, 협력 사업 이행 관련 논의를 주도하는 기반이 될 것으로 기대된다.

On Sunday afternoon, Yoon will hold separate bilateral talks with Li and Kishida at the Yongsan presidential office. Later that evening, Yoon is scheduled to host an official welcome dinner for the three countries’ delegations, including 80 business figures.

윤 대통령은 일요일 오후 용산 대통령실에서 리창 중국 총리, 기시다 후미오 일본 총리와 각각 양자회담을 한다. 이후 저녁에는 경제계 인사 80명을 포함한 3국 대표단과 공식 환영 만찬을 갖는다.
