Korea pulled off a major surprise with a 0.4-percentage-point-or-higher uptick in its growth projections by various economic institutions at home and abroad, one of the steepest among advanced economies.

The rapid upturn runs in sharp contrast to the sentiment prevalent earlier this year, as worries over sluggish domestic demand, geopolitical uncertainties and a record level of household debt prompted many policymakers and market forecasters to gauge the country's growth in the low 2 percent range.

이처럼 가파른 상승폭은 올해 초 널리 퍼져있던 분위기와는 대조적으로, 정책결정권자와 시장전망기관은 부진한 내수, 지정학적 불확실성과 역대 최대 수준의 가계부채를 우려해 2% 초반 대로 전망치를 측정했었다.

Notably, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) significantly upped its growth projection for the country's gross domestic product (GDP) this year from 2.2 percent to 2.6 percent, with Korea and the United States sharing the strongest forecast among advanced economies on the list. The scale of the upward adjustment was also one of the steepest, second only to the 0.5-percentagepoint hike for the United States, and double the 0.2-percentage-point increase for the global economy.

특히 경제협력개발기구(OECD)는 한국의 올해 국내총생산(GDP) 성장 전망치를 기존 2.2%에서 2.6%로 대폭 상향했는데, 2.6%의 성장률 전망은 선진국 중 미국과 함께 가장 높은 수치다. 전망 상향 폭도 가장 큰 축에 속해 0.5%포인트 상향된 미국에 이어 선진국 중 2위이고, 0.2%포인트였던 전세계 성장률 전망 상향 폭의 두 배다.

Q.Why such a steep revision?
A. Robust exports, as expected, drove the growth, albeit at a stronger clip than initially thought. What was unexpected was domestic demand, which has been slow since the second quarter last year, weighed down by high interest rates.

Q: 왜 이렇게 상향 폭이 가팔랐나?
A: 예상대로 견고한 수출이 성장을 견인했지만, 수출 증가가 기존 전망보다 빨랐다. 예상치 못 했던 부분은 고금리 여파로 지난해 2분기부터 부진했던 내수의 약진이었다.

The Bank of Korea (BOK) recently lifted its forecast from 2.1 percent to 2.5 percent. Of the 0.4-percentage-point hike, 0.3 percentage points were attributed to the growth in exports, and the remaining 0.1 percentage point to domestic demand, which includes private consumption and investment.

한국은행은 최근 한국의 경제성장률 전망치를 2.1%에서 2.5%로 상향했다. 0.4%포인트의 조정치 중 0.3%포인트는 수출 성장에 기인했고, 나머지 0.1%포인트는 가계소비와 투자 등을 아우르는 내수 부분에 해당한다.
