The rapid spread of Covid-19 in Korea could peak in late August, coinciding with the end of summer vacations, health authorities warned on Tuesday.

코로나19가 국내에서 빠르게 확산하고 있는 가운데 보건당국은 화요일(8월 13일) 여름 방학이 끝나는 8월 말 최고조에 달할 수 있다고 주의를 권고했다.


"When people start gathering again after the holidays, this behavior change could influence the spread of infectious diseases," Hong Jeong-il, director of the Bureau of Infectious Disease Risk Response at the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), said during a radio interview on Tuesday. "The prevalence of enclosed spaces due to air conditioning is also a significant factor contributing to the summer surge in infections," he added.

홍정익 질병관리청 감염병정책국장은 이날 라디오 인터뷰에서 "휴가가 끝나고 사람들이 다시 모이는 행동 변화가 일어나는 것이 감염병 유행에 영향을 미칠 수 있다"고 말했다. "냉방으로 인한 밀폐된 공간이 많이 생기는 것도 여름철 유행의 큰 이유"라고 덧붙였다.


Despite the concerns, the current dominant variant, KP.3 — an Omicron lineage — does not appear to have a high severity or fatality rate to warrant elevating the national crisis level.

우려에도 불구하고 현재 유행하는 오미크론 세부계통의 KP.3 변이는 중증도와 치명률이 높지 않아 위기 단계를 상향할 정도는 아니다.

"Most young people can manage their symptoms with rest and over-the-counter cold medicine, similar to other respiratory infections," Hong advised. "For high-risk groups, we strongly recommend the active prescription of treatment."

홍 국장은 "대부분의 젊은 분들은 일반 호흡기 감염병처럼 휴식하고 감기약 등으로 증상을 조절하면 된다”며 “고위험군은 치료제를 적극 처방받도록 권고한다"고 말했다.


The number of Covid-19 hospitalizations has been on the rise since late June, after steadily declining from February, according to the KDCA data. In the first week of August, 861 patients were hospitalized, a jump from the 148 cases reported in the second week of July, 226 in the third week and 475 in the fourth week — reaching levels last seen in February.

질병관리청 통계에 따르면, 올해 코로나19 입원 환자 수는 2월 이후 계속 줄다가 지난 6월 말부터 증가세로 전환한 뒤 꾸준히 늘어나고 있다. 입원 환자 수는 지난달 둘째 주 148명, 셋째 주 226명, 넷째 주 475명이었으며, 이달 첫째 주에는 861명이 신고돼 2월 수준으로 돌아갔다.

Of the 12,410 hospitalized patients, 65.2 percent are 65 and older, followed by those 50 to 64, at 18.1 percent, and those 19 to 49, at 10.3 percent.

Adding to the strain, pharmacies across the country are experiencing shortages of Covid-19 diagnostic kits and treatments.

게다가 전국적으로 약국이 코로나19 자가 진단 키트와 치료제 품귀 현상을 겪고 있는 것도 부담을 더한다.


The demand for Covid-19 treatments and self-diagnostic kits has skyrocketed in recent weeks. Use of the treatments increased from 1,272 doses in the fourth week of June to 42,000 doses in the last week of July, a 3,201.9 percent rise. Sales of protective equipment have also seen a sharp increase, with convenience store chain 7-Eleven reporting a 130 percent increase in sales of Covid-19 self-diagnostic kits during the week of Aug. 5 to 11, compared to the previous week.

코로나19 치료제와 자가 진단 키트 수요도 급증하고 있다. 치료제 사용량은 6월 넷째 주 1272명분에서 7월 다섯째 주 약 4만2000명분으로 3,201.9 % 늘어났다. 방호장비 판매도 급증하고 있으며 편의점 세븐일레븐에 따르면 5~11일 코로나 19 자가검진키트 판매량이 전주보다 130% 늘었다.



The government has described the current shortages as "temporary." Officials attribute the issue to reduced supply levels following the government's declaration of Covid-19 as "endemic" in May of last year, which led to a stabilization in case numbers and a corresponding decrease in the production of diagnostic kits and treatments.
