Blue House aide resigns over romantic tie to Shin

The fake degree scandals touched the Blue House yesterday with the announcement that President Roh Moo-hyun accepted the resignation of his chief national policy secretary, Byeon Yang-kyoon, who was allegedly involved in protecting shamed art curator and professor Shin Jeong-ah.
가짜학위 파문이 청와대까지 도달했다. 노무현 대통령은 가짜학위로 파문을 일으킨 신정아씨를 보호하는데 개입한 것으로 알려진 변양균 청와대 정책실장의 사표를 어제 수리했다.

“The prosecution’s investigation revealed that Byeon had an intimate relationship with Shin,” said Jun Hae-chul, the presidential secretary for civil affairs, at a press conference. “It is possible that Byeon will be investigated by the prosecution.”
*intimate: 친밀한, 친숙한
전해철 민정수석은 기자회견에서 “변 실장이 신씨와 친밀한 사이였다는 것이 검찰 수사로 밝혀졌다.”고 말했다. “변 실장은 검찰의 수사를 받을 것으로 보인다.”

A prosecutor, who refused to be named, said, “Byeon and Shin had exchanged about 100 e-mails and most of them were love letters. Some e-mails explicitly expressed these feelings.”

한 검찰 관계자는 “변씨와 신씨는 100여통의 이메일을 주고 받았으며 대부분은 연서였다. 일부 이메일은 노골적으로 이런 감정을 표현했다.”고 말했다.

Justice Minister Chung Soung-jin informed Blue House Chief of Staff Moon Jae-in about the prosecution’s findings on Sunday afternoon, according to Jun. The message was delivered to Roh after he returned from the APEC summit in Australia yesterday.

정성진 법무장관이 일요일 오후에 문재인 대통령 비서실장에게 이 같은 검찰 수사결과를 알려왔다고 전 수석이 전했다. 이 사실은 호주에서 열린 APEC 정상회의에 참석하고 어제 귀국한 노무현 대통령에게 전달됐다.

“The president ordered that the resignation be accepted because it would be difficult to investigate Byeon if he keeps his position,” said Jun. According to multiple sources at the Blue House, Roh was furious that Byeon had been lying about his relationship with Shin.
전 수석은 “변 실장이 현직을 유지한 채로 수사를 받는 것은 어려울 것이므로 사표를 받으라고 대통령께서 지시했다”고 말했다. 노 대통령은 변 실장이 신씨와의 관계에 대해 거짓말을 해온 것에 대해 크게 화를 냈다고 청와대 관계자들이 전했다.

“The Blue House secretariat questioned Byeon and confirmed that some of his explanations differed from the truth,” said Jun. “Byeon and Shin had known each other for several years and he mentioned her bogus degree scandal when he met the monk Jangyun on July 8,” Jun said. “Byeon also admitted that he contacted the monk indirectly through a friend while he was accompanying Roh in Guatemala from July 2 to 5.”

전 수석은 “청와대 비서실이 변 실장을 상대로 확인한 결과 그의 해명들이 일부 사실과 다르다는 것을 확인했다”고 말했다. 전 수석은 “변 실장과 신씨는 수년 전부터 잘 아는 사이였고 7월8일 장윤 스님을 만났을 때 변 실장이 신씨의 가짜학위 문제에 대해 언급했다”고 말했다. “변 실장은 또 7월 2일에서 5일 사이 과테말라에 노 대통령을 수행하는 동안 친구를 통해 간접적으로 장윤 스님과 연락했던 사실을 인정했다”

The prosecution said it discovered the relationship by analyzing a computer it confiscated from Shin’s house on Sept. 4. Byeon, who is married and has two sons, had denied his relationship with Shin and claimed that he did not mention Shin when he met Jangyun.

검찰은 9월4일 신씨의 집에서 압수한 컴퓨터를 분석해서 둘 사이의 관계를 밝혀냈다고 말했다. 아들 둘을 둔 유부남인 변 실장은 신씨와의 관계를 부인해왔고 장윤 스님과 만났을 때 신씨 문제를 언급하지 않았다고 주장해왔었다.

The monk had raised suspicions about Shin’s bogus Yale doctorate when he was serving on the board of Dongguk University, where Shin was an art professor. Jangyun was dismissed from the board after raising the questions.

장윤 스님은 동국대 이사로 재직할 때 교수로 임용된 신씨의 예일대 가짜 박사학위에 대해 의혹을 제기했었다. 장윤 스님은 그 의혹 제기 이후 이사직에서 파면됐다.

Shin was stripped of the professorship and a post as co-director of the Gwangju Biennale in July after it was revealed that she had forged her academic degrees. She has since fled the country.

학위가 가짜로 밝혀진 뒤 신씨는 교수와 광주비엔날레의 공동 예술감독에서 7월에 면직됐다. 그녀는 그 이후 한국을 떠났다.

The Blue House had defended Byeon and claimed that the media was spreading groundless suspicions. Roh said “nonsensical” suspicions were “dancing all over” about Byeon on Aug. 31 at a meeting to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Broadcast Producers Association of Korea. The suspicions were like “something out of a storybook,” Roh said a few days later.

청와대는 변 실장을 옹호해왔고 언론인 근거없는 의혹을 퍼뜨리고 있다고 주장했다. 노 대통령은 8월31일 한국방송PD협회의 20주년 기념식에서 변 실장에 대한 “터무니없는” 의혹들이 “춤추고” 있다고 말했다. 노 대통령은 몇 일 뒤 그 의혹들이 마치 “소설책에서 나오는 것” 같다고 말했다.

“The administration lied to the people,” said Park Heong-joon, the Grand National Party spokesman. “The fact that the prosecution reported the investigation to the Blue House before it told the public contradicts to the Blue House’s claim that it protects the prosecution’s independence.”

박형준 한나라당 대변인은 “행정부가 국민에게 거짓말을 했다”고 말했다. “검찰이 수사결과를 국민에게 알리기 전에 청와대에 먼저 보고했다는 사실은 검찰의 독립을 지켜주고 있다는 청와대의 주장과 정면으로 배치된다.”
