On April 19, 2013, Korean artist Song Ho-jun, 45, launched a homemade $500 satellite into space at the international space launch site in Kazakhstan, becoming the world’s first individual to do so. Though he doesn't know what ended up happening to his satellite OpenSat, whether it's still drifting in orbit or burnt to a crisp, Song said his main objective in the first place was “to show the world that there's someone who actually brings an idea into action no matter how foolish they may seem.”

2013년 4월 19일, 송호준(45) 작가는 카자흐스탄의 국제 우주 발사장에서 직접 만든 500달러짜리 인공위성을 발사했고 세계에서 처음으로 인공위성을 발사한 일반인이 됐다. 비록 그의 인공위성 오픈셋이 지금까지 궤도에서 표류하고 있을지 혹은 타서 재가 됐을지 알 수는 없지만, 송 작가는 애초에 목표가 “아무리 바보같은 아이디어라도 실행에 옮기는 사람이 있다는 것을 세상에 보여주는 것이었다”고 말했다.

Eleven years later, on March 27, Song set sail on a new adventure, competing in this year’s ‘Rolex China Sea Race 2024’ in Hong Kong with his own boat, again becoming the first Korean to do so. The race, with a 62-year history, is known for being one of the most tactical and challenging offshore races, attracting many of the world's best sailors and yachts to Hong Kong.

11년 이후인 지난 3월 27일, 송 작가는 한국인으로는 처음으로 홍콩에서 열린 ‘롤렉스 차이나 시 레이스 2024’에 개인 요트로 출전하며 새로운 모험에 나섰다. 62년 역사의 이 대회는 가장 전술적이고 도전적인 요트대회 중 하나로 알려져 있으며 세계 최고의 선원과 요트가 여기에 참여하기 위해 홍콩으로 모여든다.

The race is hosted by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and sponsored by Rolex. Since obtaining the qualification to compete in this category 1 race — meaning long distance and offshore sailing where your yacht must be completely self-sufficient and able to withstand storms and serious emergencies — doesn’t come easy, it was a surprise for Song and even the organizers themselves that the Korean team and Song's modest-looking yacht would have a chance. But the artist wanted to challenge the prejudice and show that he can make what others called a “crazy idea” into a reality.

이 대회는 홍콩 로열 요트 클럽이 주최하고 롤렉스가 후원한다. 무동력 요트로 폭풍우와 위험한 비상사태를 견디며 장거리와 근해 항해를 할 수 있어야 카테고리 1 경기에 참가할 수 있어 자격을 받는 것 자체가 쉽지 않다. 이 때문에 송 작가와 주최측 모두 송 작가의 소박한 요트와 한국팀이 대회에 참가할 수 있는 기회를 얻었다는 것에 놀랐다. 하지만 송 작가는 이러한 편견에 도전해 사람들이 ‘미친 짓’이라고 부르는 아이디어도 현실로 만들 수 있다는 것을 보여주고 싶었다고 한다.

Even Song’s seven other crew members, who competed in the race as Team Random (), said they half doubted that they would be able to finish the race. For one, the yacht that Song purchased secondhand in 2021 was not meant for racing — it was one of those so-called furniture class yachts that people often purchase for leisure after retirement.

팀 랜덤()으로 이 대회를 완주한 나머지 선원 7명조차도 경기를 마칠 수 있을지 반신반의 했다고 전했다. 우선 첫 번째 이유로 2021년 중고로 구매한 송 작가의 요트는 레이싱 용이 아닌 은퇴 후 사람들이 종종 여가용으로 사는 이른바 ‘가구 클래스’의 요트다.
