Kospi follows Wall Street, but tumble is controlled

The Korean stock market headed lower yesterday as a tumble in the U.S. stock market last Friday led Asian markets downward, but analysts said the downturn was fairly gentle.

지난 금요일에 있었던 미국 증시 폭락의 영향으로 아시아 증시가 하락세를 보인 가운데 한국 증시도 하락했다. 그러나 하락세가 꽤 완만했다.

The main Kospi index shed 66.29 points, or 3.4 percent, finishing at 1,903.81, its biggest daily loss since Aug. 16. It opened more than 90 points off Friday’s closing, hovering far under 1,900 before recovering some ground in the late afternoon. On Friday, the U.S. Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 366.94 points, or 2.6 percent, to 13,522.02.

코스피 지수는 66.29 포인트, 즉 3.4 % 하락한 1903.81로 마감했다. 하루 하락폭으로는 8월16일 이후 가장 크다. 금요일 마감 시세보다 90 포인트 하락한 지수로 개장했으며 1,900선보다 훨씬 아래에 머물다 오후 늦게 어느 정도 회복했다.

Asian markets retreated across the board. Japan’s Nikkei declined 375.90 points, or 2.2 percent. The Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong lost 1,091.42 points, or 3.7 percent, while Taiwan slid 251.09 points, or 2.6 percent. Australia’s All Ordinaries Index lost 131.20 points, or 2.0 percent.

아시아 증시는 모두 하락했다. 일본 니케이 지수는 2.2 % (375.90 포인트) 하락했다. 홍콩 항셍지수는 3.7 % (1,091.42 포인트) 떨어졌다. 타이완은 2.6 % (251.09 포인트) 빠졌고, 호주 증시지수는 2.0 % (131.20 포인트)를 잃었다.

Market analysts said the downfall on the Kospi was affected by concerns that have weighed on global investors recently, such as surging oil prices, uncertainties in the United States’ economy and China’s overheating stock markets.

증시 애널리스트들은 원유가격의 상승, 미국경제의 불확실성, 중국 증시의 과열 등 최근 국제 투자가들을 짓눌렀던 우려들의 영향을 받아 코스피 지수가 하락한 것이라고 말했다.

There is no single factor to explain the market’s turmoil, according to Lee Hyun-joo, an analyst with Tongyang Investment and Securities. “The decrease today appears to have no direct cause,” Lee said. “This uncertainty will likely put pressure on the market for the time being.”

동양투자증권의 이현주 애널리스트에 따르면 하나의 요인으로 지금 증시의 혼란을 설명할 수 없다. 이씨는 “오늘 증시 하락은 직접적인 원인이 없는 것 같다. 이런 불확실성이 당분간 증시에 압박을 줄 것 같다.”고 말했다.

While analysts agreed that the Kospi will see additional downturns in the short term, they remain guardedly bullish on the market. “It is not like in August, when the liquidity crisis swept global stock markets,” Lee said.

애널리스트들은 단기적으로 추가 하락이 있을 것이라는 예측에 동의하지만, 조심스럽게 낙관적인 장세를 내다봤다. 이씨는 “유동성 위기가 전세계 증시를 휩쓸고 지나갔던 8월과는 다릅니다.”고 말했다.

The Korean index, which rose from 1,300 points early this year to 2,000 points in July, collapsed to 1,630 in August after being hit by the global credit crunch over the U.S. subprime housing market. In three trading days beginning Aug. 14, it lost more than 200 points. On Aug. 16, it lost 125.91, or 6.9 percent.

올초 1,300 포인트였다가 6월에 2,000 포인트를 돌파했던 한국 증시지수는 미국 서브프라임 사태로 전세계가 신용경색을 겪은 이후 8월에 1,630선으로 무너졌다. 8월14일부터 거래일 3일 동안 한국 증시지수는 200 포인트 이상 하락했다. 8월16일 125.91 포인트를 잃어 6.9% 하락했다.
