(Political revenge or liquidation?)

This is today’s Anchor Briefing.

That day, there was a sad joke that the sales of soju infinitely increased.

It was discovered that all the new recruits of Kangwon Land, the only casino Koreans are permitted to visit, all had landed their jobs through their connections for two consecutive years. I presume that the company may have made a new Guinness record with its percentage of recruitment-related appointments.

The young people who wrote countless number of job applications and their parents who did not have such connections were in despair after hearing the news.

This obscene corruption does not apply only to Kangwon Land. The roots of corruption related with employment are embedded so deep within our society, the actual number of public and financial institutions involved in recruitment corruptions goes over 40.

Five years ago, when several European countries were drowning in their own economic crises, I had the chance to interview a Greek politician from the European parliament.

When asked about the biggest cause of the current crisis in Greece, his answer was very succinct:

“It’s due to the corruption.”

He said that every time a new congressman is elected, the number of government employees increases.

In other words, the newly-elected congressman hired his relatives or friends as government employees by wielding his power. Thus, even when the congressman failed to be reelected, the government employees were able to stay. As a consequence, there was an overpopulation of government officials hired through the congressmen’s influence.

When presidential candidate Park Geun-hye was campaigning, the ruling party claimed that Europe’s economic crisis was due to excessive welfare. However, the real reason for their downfall was due to corruption.

*excessive: 지나친

“former, former, and former…”

Ahn Cheol-soo, the chairman of the People’s Party, spoke from Germany.

He strongly criticized the current administration’s movement to rinse off the former governments’ wrongdoings, calling it a form of “political retaliation.” The wrongdoings which the current administration is “taking revenge” on are as follows:

The NIS’s special activity expenses delivered to presidential aides, the blacklist that choked artists and journalists, the online smear campaign by the national spy agency and military cyberwarfare unit which was intended to disturb the presidential election and agitate public opinion, the Four Major Rivers Restoration Projects which dissolved into thin air and the scandals surrounding the resource diplomacy, or the absence of social justice, the most symbolic one being the corruption surrounding employment…

One word that best summarizes the list of wrongdoings is, if I may borrow that Greek politician’s remark, corruption.

However, attempts to liquidate long-accumulated corruption have been downgraded to a form of political revenge.

Then I wonder what Ahn would think of the court ruling that happened a year ago in Germany, the country he is currently traveling in…

Last year in Germany, a 94-year-old man was sentenced to five years in prison. His crime for his imprisonment was that he collaborated with the genocide at the Auschwitz concentration camp during the World War II.

Upon today’s standards, that would be “taking revenge” on the former, former, former… government of many, many years ago…
