After hiatus, actor Bong hits the stage
Actor Bong Tae-gyu is making his debut in musical theater in “Falling for Eve.” He says he practices singing until 3 a.m. every day to prepare for his role. By Kwon Hyeok-jae
The 30-year-old actor will play Adam in “Falling for Eve,” the Korean version of the Off-Broadway musical.
The musical, written by Tony Award-winner Joe DiPietro, is a silly retelling of original sin but with a twist: Adam, who longs after Eve after she eats the forbidden fruit, is left behind in the Garden of Eden, only to take the bite himself so he can join her.
“Falling for Eve,” opening Saturday at the M Theater of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, will return Bong to the spotlight since his hiatus after box-office hits “When Romance Meets Destiny” (2005) and “See You After School” (2006).
“I hadn’t had a foundation for acting, and I became aware of my imperfect performing skills,” Bong said, explaining his break from acting. “Through that realization, I have been trying to build up experience and to fill the missing gaps in my acting. During the period, I became an ever more genuine person.”
Q. This is your debut in a musical. Are you confident about your singing?
A. I sing pretty well at noraebang (singing rooms), and I have always thought of myself as a good singer. In the sitcom “Non-Stop,” I even sang the theme song.
I’ve always admired musicals and wanted to try being on stage. My friend suggested that I audition for “Falling for Eve.” I took his advice and tried out. The production company told me to prepare a song that suits me, so I thought that would be the only song I would have to perform in front of the judges. But at the audition, they handed me new music and gave me 10 minutes to practice. I was shocked, but what can you do? I just went for it. Fortunately, I got a call back.
What was the reaction to your singing?
The production company told me that they picked me for being able to sing high notes. But they said my middle- and low-pitch notes needed a lot of work.
It is hard for me to get rid of those showy techniques that I got used to at noraebang. The music director told me to not play with the music, but I’m not even in a place to play with the rhythm and the notes. Playing with the music is still beyond my capacity. I feel so small nowadays being at rehearsals. However, I wake up in the morning full of energy and excitement thinking of new lessons. I have never felt this alive before.
What is the biggest change about you following your transition from a movie actor to a musical theater actor?
I sold my luxury foreign car when I started going on stage. I instead use the subway to get to my destinations, and I don’t even have a manager for scheduling. It is a small adjustment I made for myself. I no longer wanted to be a snob and wanted go back to my real, unadulterated self. I realized how arrogant I had been as I became more independent.
Do you plan on acting in musicals after “Falling for Eve”?
I wish to. It feels so amusing when the company’s acting is in harmony after practice. It is even thrilling. I feel like I am now back in those years when I was new at acting. Learning how to sing and dance makes me more than happy. But I don’t know if any production company will want me after I am done with this show.

뮤지컬 ‘폴링 포 이브’ 도전한 배우 봉태규
“바닥부터 새로 다진다는 각오
배우 봉태규(30)가 뮤지컬에 도전한다. 23일부터 서울 세종문화회관 M씨어터에서 개막하는 ‘폴링 포 이브’라는 작품이다. ‘아이 러브 유’ ‘올슉업’ 등으로 국내에서도 꽤 친숙한, 미국 브로드웨이 극작가 조 디피에트로의 신작이다. 인류 최초의 인간 아담과 이브가 알고 보니 엉터리였다는, 기발한 상상력이 돋보이는 뮤지컬이다. 코믹 이미지가 강한 봉태규와도 어울릴 듯싶다.
그리고 보니 봉태규, 요즘 뜸했다. 2000년대 중반 영화 ‘광식이 동생 광태’ ‘방과 후 옥상’ 등으로 한창 주가가 높았지만 최근엔 스크린이나 브라운관에서 보기 힘들었다. 그의 대답은 이랬다. “제가 워낙 근본이 없어서, 연기가 날아다니더라고요. 그걸 찾아 방황했어요. 덕분에 ‘싸가지’도 함께 찾았고요.”
-뮤지컬 데뷔다. 노래에 자신 있나.
“노래방에선 꽤 한다. 나도 내가 노래 좀 하는 줄 알았다. 시트콤 ‘논스톱’을 할 때는 주제곡을 불러 음반을 내기도 했다. 뮤지컬에 대한 막연한 동경도 있었다. 그런 와중에 친한 후배가 이 작품을 권했다. 오디션에 응했다. 자유곡을 준비해 오라고 해서 그것만 부르면 되는 줄 알았다. 그런데 현장에서 악보 주고 10분 연습하더니 그거 부르라는 거다. 당황했다. 어찌 하겠나. 시치미 떼고 불렀다. 덜컥 붙었다.”
-결국 노래 잘 한다는 얘기인데….
“(손사래를 치며) 전혀 아니다. 제작사말로는 ‘고음 치고 올라가는 거 보고 뽑았더니 이토록 중·저음이 안 될 줄 몰랐다’고 한다. 노래방 등에서 몸에 밴 몹쓸 기교를 고치는 게 가장 힘들다. 음악감독은 ‘음을 갖고 놀면 된다’고 하시는데 놀긴커녕, 버겁기만 하다. 요즘처럼 내가 초라해진 적이 있었나 싶다. 그래도 아침마다 가슴 벅차게 일어난다. 이토록 살아 있다는 걸 느끼는 게 얼마만인지 모르겠다.”
-최근 활동이 뜸했다.
“대중에게 노출된 게 적었을 뿐이다. 2009년부터 1년 남짓 ‘웃음의 대학’이란 연극했다. 믿기지 않겠지만 난 어릴적 길거리 캐스팅돼 연예계에 데뷔했다. 고3 때였다. 이후 거의 쉬지 않고 쭉 활동해 왔다. 연기를 따로 전공하거나 공부한 적이 없었다. 선배들도 툭 하면 ‘넌 연기에 근본이 없잖아’라는 말을 장난 삼아 많이 했다. 나 역시도 갈증이 컸다. 그 와중에 무대를 접하니 가슴이 뻥 뚫리는 것 같았다. 에너지가 달랐다. 게다가 운 좋게도 ‘웃음의 대학’을 하면서 소극장·중극장·대극장을 다 경험할 수 있었다. 그 연장선상에서 뮤지컬에도 도전한 거다.”
-무대에 서보니 그토록 좋은가
“연극 시작하면서 외제차를 팔았다. 지금도 매니저 없이 혼자서 지하철 타고 다닌다. 신발 깔창도 뺐다. 별것 아닌 듯싶지만 겉치장 안하고, 폼 안 잡고, 솔직 담백한 본래의 내 모습으로 돌아가자는 의미였다. 혼자서 다니고 혼자서 해결하고 사람들과 어울리다 보니 내가 예전에 얼마나 건방지고 까다로웠는지 새삼 돌아보게 됐다. 어쩌면 실제 무대에 오르는 것보다 더 많은 것을 느끼게 해주는 일상이다.”
-계속 뮤지컬 할 계획인가.
“좋은 배우들과 호흡을 맞추면서 착착 맞아 떨어져 어느 순간 완성이 될 때의 쾌감이란, 정말 짜릿하다. 연기를 처음 배우는 신인이 된 기분이다. 게다가 노래에 춤까지. 너무 행복하다. 난 하고는 싶다. 그런데 이 작품 끝나고 또 불러줄지는….”
