Korean-made ‘Accomplices’ trumps ‘Gravity’ in admissions

The Hollywood hit “Gravity” gave away its top position in the Korean box office only one week after its release to a locally-made film, despite staying on top for three weeks in the United States.

Although “Gravity” lost its top spot in admissions, it still made more revenue over the weekend as many chose to watch the space movie in 3-D or IMAX, whose tickets are sold at a higher rate at local theaters.

“Gravity” made 5.6 billion won ($5.27 million), taking over 37 percent of tickets sales made from Friday to Sunday with a little more than 580,000 admissions, but the No. 1 movie “Accomplices” only managed to make around 4.6 million won even with more admissions at 649,190.

“Accomplices,” directed by Guk Dong-seok, features actress Son Ye-jin and actor Kim Kap-soo. Son became suspicious that her dad might have been a murderer in a child-abduction case whose statue of limitations is about to run out.

The Korean box office was mostly filled with Korean movies except for “Captain Phillips,” which came in fifth place, and “Despicable Me 2,” which came in 10th.

Actor-turned-director Park Joong-hoon’s directorial debut work “Top Star,” featuring actor Uhm Tae-woong, made almost 670 million won and garnered 94,549 admissions over the weekend, ending up in sixth place. Also, “Rough Play,” which also entered the top 10 list over the weekend, garnered a little more than 63,000 admissions.
