Jaurim’s got the secret to longevity : The 22-year-old band’s latest album deals with themes of life and society

Over the past two decades, Jaurim has been praised by fans, both old and young, for its unique musicality and powerful narrative style. The band has managed to stay active since their debut, releasing a total of 10 full-length albums and nine special albums.
“I still can’t believe that 22 years have passed since our debut. I felt the same when we marked our 20th anniversary,” said Lee.
Recently, the trio returned with its first full-length album in five years, “Jaurim.” Consisting of 10 songs, the self-titled album touches upon complex themes of life and society.
Prior to their album’s release, the band sat with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, to talk about their success.
The following are edited excerpts from the interview.
Q. How do you feel about your new album? What was the process behind creating this album?
A. Kim Yuna: Whenever we create a new album, we always go through [three] phases. The first stage occurs when we start recording for the first time. [In this phase] all of us are busy and [mentally] stressed. We’re always thinking, “Is this all we got? When will we finish this?” But after this stage [of emotional anxiety] passes, we work like horses and get things done quickly. Then, we finally become carried away with the outcome of our [new] music. Currently, we’re still in this stage so we’re really satisfied with the album.
Was there a particular song that you wrote to celebrate your 20th anniversary?
Kim Yuna: Yes. The 10th track, “XOXO,” off of this album. We made this song to show our gratitude to our beloved fans and released it last year. We really appreciate our fans for understanding [and supporting] our music. I think we’re in a [mutual] relationship with our fans by helping each other out. Thanks to them, we were able to concentrate on our music. Anyways, we think that “XOXO” carries a significant meaning for fans because we haven’t really produced songs that show thanks to our fans.
Can you explain the meaning of the lead single “For Ever and Ever?”
Kim Yuna: Ten of our peers [suddenly] died over the past two to three years. It was shocking because these individuals were all healthy. What we talked about during that time was creating a song on the theme of enjoying life to the fullest because no one knows what’s going to happen. We first started working on the theme of a will, which was dark. While working on this theme, we imagined what it would feel like to be in the shoes of someone who’s about to die. We thought that it would be better to have that person recall their treasured memories. By changing direction, we were able to create the song that we have now.
Why did the band select “For Ever and Ever” as the album’s lead single?
Kim Yuna: Our company gave us a list of potential songs that we could sing live. After eliminating one, which required a lot of time and effort, from our list of choices, we selected this as our lead single.
The song is placed in the middle of the album. Was this done on purpose?
Kim Yuna: It was not our original intention to put the lead single as the fifth track, but we like this arrangement because the flow is much smoother this way. I felt it was a stroke of genius to place “The Age of Mad Dogs” as the first track. By doing so, the album starts with a blast, so it triggers suspense.
Lee: Nothing was planned. We realized the context [of the order] only after completing production.
What is your standard for making albums?
Kim Jin-man: We want to produce an album that all three of us can enjoy listening to. But honestly, it’s really hard to meet that standard.
What are your future plans? Will you guys eventually split up?
Kim Jin-man: We did talk about splitting up once. I think we’ll split up when we feel that the quality of our music decreases. Thankfully, we feel really satisfied with our newly-released album; we think that it’s better than our last album.
What will Jaurim’s music be like in the future?
Jaurim: We will continue walking on the same path until we are able to create music that we are all satisfied with.

자우림 ”20주년? 비행기 타지 않겠다”
밴드 자우림이 음악 활동 20년을 돌아봤다. 1990년대 홍대를 돌며 "세상을 부숴버리겠다"는 마음으로 음악을 해온 이들은 2018년 여전히 청춘의 마음을 대변하는 음악으로 사랑받고 있다. 22년차가 됐지만 큰 감흥은 느끼지 않는다고 했다. 다른 아르바이트를 하지 않고도 음악만으로 먹고 사는 지금을 다행으로 생각했고, 지금의 감정을 잘 담아낼 수 있는 음악을 하는 것이 변함없는 목표라고 말했다.
셀프 타이틀인 정규10집 '자우림'에는 지난해 선공개된 'XOXO'를 포함해 '광견시대(狂犬時代)', '아는 아이', '슬리핑 뷰티(Sleeping Beauty)', '있지', '영원히 영원히', '기브 미 원 리즌(Give me one reason)', '사이코 해븐(Psycho heaven)', '아더 원스 아이(Other one’s eye)', '오버 더 레인보우(Over the rainbow)'까지 총 10곡이 수록됐다. 멤버들은 "가장 자우림다운 음악으로 채웠다. 동화적이면서도 현실적이고, 몽환적인 동시에 관능적인 다양한 상상력을 자극하는 노래들이다"고 소개했다.
-22일 정규10집 발매를 앞둔 소감은.
김윤아 "앨범을 만들고 나면 항상 정기적으로 거치는 과정이 있다. 처음 녹음시작하고 바쁠 때는 '이것 밖에 안 되나' '언제 다 하지' 하는 괴로움에 시달린다. 이 시기가 지나면 정신줄을 놓고 영혼없이 일을 처리할 수 있게 된다. 그 시기가 다 지나면 앨범이 딱 나오게 되는데, 그 이후 자아도취의 시기가 도래한다. 지금 자아도취 시기라서 이 앨범이 너무 좋고 발매가 기다려진다."
-벌써 22년차가 됐다.
이선규 "20주년 때도 그랬지만 실감이 나질 않는다."
김진만 "그런 이야기를 주위에서 가끔 듣는데 우리를 비행기 태우려고 하는 것 같다. 아직 타지 않으려 한다."
-20주년을 기념한 곡이 있나.
김윤아 "10번 트랙 'XOXO'로 보면 될 것 같다. 팬 분들께 감사한 마음으로 작업했고 만 20주년이 되던 지난해 선공개를 했다. 우리가 음악에만 집중할 수 있었던 것은 우리 음악을 이해해주신 팬 분들 덕분이다. 우리도, 팬들도 초심 잃지 않고 서로를 지켜주고 있다고 생각했다. 우리가 감사에 대해 노래한 것이 별로 없어서 나름대로 의미가 있다."
-'영원히 영원히' 곡 설명을 해달라.
김윤아 "처음 만들기 시작했을 때 주변에 건강하신 분들이 2~3년 사이 열 분 가까이 돌아가셨다. 자우림이 이야기 했던 것 중 하나가 '매일 무슨 일이 생길 지 모르니까 지금 여기서 행복해지자'인데 그런 맥락을 가진 노래다. 처음에는 '유서'라는 가제를 정해두고 어둡게 작업했는데, 마지막을 눈 앞에 둔 어떤 사람이 소중했던 기억을 떠올리는 것을 상상하면서 지금의 분위기가 나왔다."
-타이틀곡이 '영원히 영원히'가 된 배경은.
김윤아 "회사에 방송에서 라이브가 가능한 노래를 알려줬고 그 안에서 선택이 됐다. 공연할 때 관객들과 엄청난 시간을 만들기 위해 넣은 노래가 있어서 그 한 곡을 배제하고 나머지 중에 타이틀곡을 골랐다. 회사에서 여러 모니터를 한 후 '영원히 영원히'로 정해졌다. 의도를 갖고 타이틀곡을 중간인 5번 트랙에 배치한 것은 아니다."
이선규 "의도하는 건 아무 것도 없다. 앨범을 다 만들고 나서 어떤 맥락이 있다는 걸 느끼는데 이번에도 그랬다."
김윤아 "이렇게 이어지는 흐름이 가장 앨범이 좋게 들리는 것 같다. 1번 트랙 '광견시대'를 앞에 배치한 것은 신의 한수라 본다. 앞에서 '빵' 터뜨리고 가니까 뒤에 음악이 궁금해지는 느낌이다."
20여 년간의 변화를 느끼나.
김윤아 "처음 자우림을 화자로 내세웠을 땐 세상과 싸우고 있을 때였다. 그에 비하면 지금은 많은 것을 체념하고 있다고 생각한다. 화자가 성장하고 나이를 먹은 것도 있겠지만 시대별로 하고 싶은 이야기가 달라졌다는 생각도 든다. 우리가 X세대인데 그 시절 2030 세대는 뭐든 싸울 준비가 되어 있었다. 요즘엔 '죽지 않았으니 살아야지' 하는 정도로 생각하는 친구들이 많은 것 같다."
이선규 "IMF를 겪었고 세기말을 살아오면서 싸울 일이 많았다. 참 신기한 건 테이프로 들었던 '일탈'을 지금도 좋아해주신다는 거다. 자우림의 20대를 요즘의 20대가 공감한다는 것도 신기하다."
-앨범을 만드는 기준은 뭔가.
김진만 "우리 셋이 듣기에 좋은 앨범을 만들어야겠다. 그 기준 맞추기에도 벅차다. 우리가 해체를 할 것인가에 대한 이야기를 나눠본 적이 있다. 지금 낸 10집보다 앞으로 낼 11집, 12집이 점점 질이 떨어진다고 느껴지면 자연스럽게 해체할 것 같다. 다행히 전작보다 마음에 들고 좋은 앨범을 만들어오고 있다고 생각한다."
-앞으로 자우림의 음악은.
자우림 "지금까지 해오던 대로 해 나가려고 한다. 우리가 만족스럽게 꺼낼 수 있는 음악을 할 때까지."
