Lee Dong-gook looks to score 20 goals for Jeonbuk this year

Having led the league in scoring two seasons ago with Jeonbuk, Lee managed to earn a spot on the 2010 South Africa World Cup squad - his first World Cup appearance since the 1998 France World Cup - and played a limited role off the bench. After scoring 22 goals for Jeonbuk last season, Lee is now focused on producing goals in bunches to help his team win the K-League and AFC Champions League titles.
Lee talked with the JoongAng Ilbo about his preparation for the upcoming season and his thoughts on the state of the national football team.
Q. How was the overseas training camp in Brazil?
A. It was my first time training in Brazil. The weather was nice and the training sessions went well. I’m satisfied with finishing the camp and exhibition games without any injuries.
Do you have any personal goals for the upcoming season, aside from winning the K-League title and the AFC Champions League?
It’s my top priority to contribute to the team so that we can win the K-League and AFC Champions League. Since I’m a forward, I think about scoring a lot. It’s my goal to try and score as much I can, but I think it would be ideal to have 15 to 20 goals. I know it is a very difficult feat but I want to approach every game with the focus and determination to score every game.
Who are some of your competitors or top goal scorers in the league?
I think Dejan Damjanovic of FC Seoul has to be one of the favorites to top the league in scoring. Having said that, it will be difficult to see a top goal scorer from teams like FC Seoul, Jeju United, Jeonbuk Motors or the Suwon Bluewings because they have to also compete in the AFC Champions League.
It takes a lot out of players, physically, to compete in the Champions League. I think it will come down to Yoo Byung-soo of Incheon United and (Adriano) Shuva of Pohang.
Your club added forward Jung Sung-hoon to the attack in the offseason. Having trained with him, what are your thoughts on Jung?
We share many similarities and complement each other well. If one of us gets in position near the net, the other can stay active and look to create opportunities. It works out well for me since Jung can relieve some of the defensive pressure. He protects the ball well and has good size, so that should be a big plus for our offense.
In comparison to last season, what is your assessment of Jeonbuk for the upcoming season?
Jung, Lee Seung-hyun and Huang Bowen are all new additions and they can all play well. We definitely upgraded our roster.
Last season, we did not have a lot of depth and had trouble finding players to fill in for those with injuries. We are now capable of replacing injured players. We’re looking a lot better than last season.
The 2011 Asian Cup (in Qatar) was televised in Brazil. What was the most memorable game for you?
The semifinal match against Japan remains the most memorable game for me. I got the impression that Japanese football has progressed a lot. Many teams try and emulate Barcelona’s style of play, but Japan is the closest in Asia to Barcelona.
I was expecting a lot from (Korea) and it was a disappointing loss. Because I had training that day, I missed the penalty shootout. I did send a text message to Hwang Jae-won (who allowed a penalty kick goal to Japan) after he scored the equalizer in the dying minutes of extra time. I told him he had been to hell and back.
National team manager Cho Kwang-rae is keen on filling his roster with young talent. What’s your take on Cho’s approach?
Cho is shaping his team (his way). The national team is in need of roster changes. We need to look at the moves in a positive light. Many talented young players need to be developed in order for Korean football to continue to make progress.
Can you provide our readers with your guess on who will finish in the top six in 2011?
I think FC Seoul, Suwon and we will fight for the league title. Pohang and Ulsan will also make the playoffs. It’s difficult to guess who will earn the final playoff spot, but I would have to say Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma, Gyeongnam FC and the Chunnam Dragons will battle for the final spot.
Koo Ja-cheol led the 2011 Asian Cup in scoring and managed to earn a contract with VfL Wolfsburg in Germany. How was your stint in the German Bundesliga and do you have any advice for Koo?
Koo is a skilled player and a hard worker. He definitely has the potential to continue to progress.
When I joined the Bundesliga, there wasn’t much information available for me. Internet was not as widely used as it is today and I didn’t even know how many teams were in the Bundesliga before signing. I didn’t have much time to prepare for my new surroundings.
It was tough to be alone in a new environment. It would’ve been a little easier if I got more playing time and I was able to direct my focus on the matches, but that was not the case.

2011 K-리그 개막이 채 2주도 남지 않았다. 내달 5일이면 K-리그가 대장정을 시작한다. 일간스포츠가 K-리그를 빛낼 감독과 선수들을 연속으로 인터뷰했다. ‘2011 K-리그 릴레이 인터뷰’ 첫 회 주인공은 ‘라이언킹’ 이동국이다. 앞으로 주목할 만한 사령탑과 국내외 스타들을 차례로 소개한다.
여심(女心)을 흔드는 미소는 여전했다. 하지만 아기처럼 뽀얀 피부는 구릿빛으로 변해있었다. 4주간 치러진 브라질 훈련의 강도가 얼굴에 그대로 녹아 있었다. 20일 목포 현대호텔 만난 이동국은 그렇게 변해 있었다.
1층에 위치한 커피숍 사라(SARA)에 들어선 이동국은 기자를 보자 "잘 지내셨어요?"라며 반갑게 인사했다. 환한 표정에서 새 시즌에 대한 자신감이 느껴졌다. 자리에 앉은 이동국은 생과일 주스를 시켰다. 주스가 나오자 이동국은 "너무 어려운 질문은 노 코멘크 할겁니다"라며 웃었다.
-브라질 전지훈련 성과는.
"브라질 전지훈련은 처음이었다. 날씨도 좋았고 훈련도 잘 소화했다. 연습 경기도 부상없이 끝냈기 때문에 만족스러운 전지훈련이었다."
-K-리그와 아시안축구연맹(AFC) 챔피언스리그 우승은 당연한 목표일테고. 개인적인 목표가 있다면.
"스트라이커이기 때문에 득점에 대한 생각을 많이 한다. 매 경기 한 골을 넣는게 목표다. 가능성이 높지 않다는 걸 안다. 다만 공격수로서 매 경기 한 골은 넣는다는 집중력을 갖고 경기에 임하고 싶다.(이동국은 인터뷰가 끝나자 '매 경기 한 골은 너무 많은가요? 15골~20골로 바꿔주실 수 있나요'라며 물었다. 안티팬들의 반응을 신경쓰는 거 같았다.)
-매 경기 한 골이라면 득점왕에 오를 수 있다. 득점왕 경쟁자를 꼽으면.
"개인 기량만 보면 데얀이 유력할 거 같다. 하지만 K-리그와 챔피언스리그를 병행해야 하는 서울·제주·전북·수원에서는 득점왕이 나오지 않을 거 같다. 선수들의 피로도가 높기 때문이다. 지난해 득점왕에 올랐던 인천 유병수나 포항 슈바가 득점왕 경쟁을 펼칠 것 같다."
-정성훈이 공격진에 합류했다. 함께 훈련을 해 보니 어떤가.
"비슷한 스타일이기는 하지만 도움이 많이 된다. 중앙에서 한 명이 버티고 있으면 다른 한 명이 주위에서 많이 뛰면서 공격 기회를 만들수 있다. 나한테 집중되던 수비가 분산되는 효과가 있다. 볼 소유 능력과 높이가 있어 팀 공격에 큰 플러스 효과가 있을 것이다."
-지난해 전북의 전력을 100%라 할 때 올 시즌 전북의 전력은 어느정도인가.
"정성훈·이승현·황보원 등 새로 영입된 선수들의 기량이 좋다. 충분히 보강이 됐다. 지난해에는 선수층이 두껍지 못해 부상자가 겹치면서 전력이 급격히 약해진 적이 있었는데 올 해는 부상자가 나와도 대체 선수가 충분히 있다. 작년과 비교해 훨씬 좋아졌다.(이동국은 몇 %가 늘었냐는 질문에는 끝내 답하지 않았다)"
-올 시즌 K-리그 정규리그 순위를 예상해보면. 6위까지만 말해달라.
"서울과 수원, 그리고 우리(전북)가 우승을 다툴 거 같다. 포항과 울산도 6강 플레이오프에 오를 것이다, 마지막 한 자리는 예측이 어려운데 성남·경남·전남이 경쟁을 벌일 거 같다."
-재작년이 이동국의 해였다면 지난해에는 '절친' 김은중을 위한 시즌이었다. 시즌이 끝나고 주고 받은 얘기가 있나.
"1999년 나이지리아 세계 청소년대회에 출전했던 선수들의 모임이 있다. 나와 은중이, 박동혁 등이 주축이고 모임 이름은 '이마발(이 시대의 마지막 발악)'이다. 은중이가 지난해 K-리그 MVP가 된 뒤 '이마발'이 같이 저녁 식사를 하며 축하해줬다. 하지만 모임이 회비로 운영되기에 은중이가 계산하지는 않았다. 회비로 했다. 재작년 나도 마찬가지였다.(웃음)"
-브라질에서도 아시안컵에 생중계 됐다고 들었다. 인상깊게 본 경기는.
"일본과 준결승이 가장 기억에 남는다. 일본 축구가 굉장히 발전했다는 느낌을 받았다. 많은 팀들이 바르셀로나 축구를 따라 하는데 현재 아시아에서는 일본이 가장 바르셀로나에 근접한 거 같다."
-팬으로서 한국의 경기를 지켜봤을 텐데. 가장 아쉬웠던 순간은 언제였나.
"역시 일본과 준결승이다. 가장 기대를 많이 했던 경기라 이기지 못해 아쉬웠다. 훈련 시간과 겹쳐 승부차기는 못 봤다. 연방 후반 막판 재원이가 골을 넣었을 때 문자를 보냈다. '너 지옥 갔다가 살아왔구나'고."
-조광래팀에 어린 선수들이 대거 발탁되고 있는데. 어떻게 생각하나.
"현 대표팀 감독님이 추진중이고 세대교체도 필요하기 때문에 긍정적으로 바라봐야 한다. 한국 축구의 발전을 위해 재능있는 젊은 선수들이 많이 나와줘야 한다."
-구자철이 아시안컵 득점왕을 차지한 뒤 독일 분데스리가에 진출했다.
"개인 기술이 뛰어나고 성실하고 프로 근성이 있다. 좋은 선수다. 앞으로 더 대성할 수 있는 가능성 있다."
-독일 브레멘에서 뛰던 시절을 떠올려본다면.(이동국은 지난 2001년 6개월간 독일 분데스리가 브레멘에서 뛰었다)
"그 때는 외국 축구를 접할 수 있는 정보가 없었다. 오지에 갔다고 생각하면 된다. 인터넷도 거의 안 됐고. 독일에 몇 팀이 있는 줄도 모르고 같다. 정보가 거의 없는 상태였다. 그만큼 준비를 할 시간이 없었다. 재활 도중에 훈련 삼아 갔다가 계약을 해 몸도 완전한 상황이 아니었다. 가낭 힘들었던 부분은 외로움이다. 여가 시간을 혼자 보내는 게 너무 힘들었다. 외로웠다. 한국에 가고 싶은 생각이 자주 들었다. 심리적인 부분이 결국 경기력에 영향을 주더라. 경기에 자주 출전했으면 그나마 괜찮을 텐데, 경기도 자주 못 뛰었다."
-구자철에게 분데스리가 선배로서 성공을 위한 조언을 한다면.
"운동은 한국에서 하는 만큼만 하면 된다. 좀 더 거칠어질 필요는 있다. 심리적으로 좀 더 강해져야 한다. 경기에 뛰지 못하더라도 좌절하지 말고 정신력으로 극복해야 한다. 동료들과 여가 시간을 함께 보내는 것도 중요하다."

4. 다시 태어난다면 어떤 직업을? 좋아하는 일 하면서 명예와 돈을 얻고 또 국가를 위해 뛸 수 있는 운동 선수가 좋다. 다만 축구와 같은 단체 운동이 아닌 테니스, 골프 같은 개인 운동을 하고 싶다.
5. 신체 조건을 바꾸고 싶은 선수가 있다면? 생각해 본 적은 없는데. 최태욱의 스피드는 부럽다.
6. 요즘 즐겨듣는 노래는? 위 노 스피크 아메리카노(We no speak americano). 신나는 음악.
7. 트위터로 가장 많은 대화를 나누는 선수는? 성남 남궁도. 우리가 AFC 챔피언스리그에서 만나는 세레소 오사카와 경기를 치러 이것저것 묻고 있다.
8. 최근 가장 큰 고민은? 요즘은 고민이 없다. 지금처럼만 지냈으면 좋겠다. 시즌이 기다려진다.
