Macedonian striker is back in K-League

Macedonian footballer Stevica Ristic, 29, is becoming a new offensive threat for Suwon Samsung Bluewings FC.

The striker, better known as “Stevo” in the K-League, signed with the Bluewings on July 6 and is already off to a good start, scoring two goals in his first two matches.

Suwon, which had been considered a title contender earlier this year, has been having trouble with its offense throughout the season.

The team’s three foreign attackers - Bergson, Alexander Geynrikh and Marcel Augusto Ortolan - were expected to score a lot of goals but the trio has combined for just six goals in 18 matches.

The team tried a different tactic and signed a more familiar name in Ristic, and so far it has paid off.

Ristic is no stranger to Korean football fans. The former Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors and Pohang Steelers striker played 66 games and scored 27 goals in the K-League between 2007 and 2009.

He played an important role in Pohang’s AFC Champions League win in 2009, but simply didn’t get along well with Brazilian coach Sergio Farias and decided to leave.

Ristic moved to Uzbek club FC Bunyodkor in 2010 and later played for Russian club Amkar Perm before signing a two-year deal with Suwon on July 6.

“Korea and the K-league is a comfortable place for me,” Ristic told Ilgan Sports on Tuesday.

The striker added that it’s his teammates who help him score goals. “Suwon has very good players,” Ristic said. “They create chances for me and that is why I can score goals easily.”

Suwon head coach Yoon Sung-hyo said Ristic will boost not only the team’s offense, but the team as a whole.

“The pressure on the midfield and defense gets heavier when strikers don’t score goals” Yoon said. “‘Stevo’ has good movement and power, which will help our midfield and defense in general.”

While scoring is important, Ristic said it’s more important to help his team win the AFC Champions League this year.

“I want to score at least 10 goals,” Ristic said. “But more importantly, I want to score in an important situation.”

‘복덩이’ 스테보, 수원의 부활 이끌까?

스테보가 수원 삼성에 새 바람을 일으키고 있다. 팀에 합류한 지 나흘만인 10일 전남과 경기에서 마수걸이 골을 신고한 뒤 16일 인천전에서도 골 맛을 봤다. K리그에 돌아오자마자 숨 한 번 고르지 않고 킬러 본능을 발휘하고 있다.

스테보는 16일 수원 월드컵경기장에서 열린 인천과의 홈경기에서 전반 34분 선제 결승골을 터뜨렸다. 박종진이 수비수 사이를 뚫고 찔러 준 스루패스 받아 침착하게 골키퍼를 따돌린 뒤 골망을 갈랐다. 수원은 스테보의 활약에 힘입어 1-0 승리를 거뒀다.

이 날 승리는 수원에 의미가 컸다. 6일 컵대회 4강에서 부산에 1-2로 패한 뒤 10일 리그 경기에서도 전남에 1-3 역전패하며 팀 분위기가 자칫 흔들릴 수 있는 상황이었기 때문이다. 그러나 홈에서의 승리로 연패의 사슬을 끊고 6강 진출을 향한 교두보를 마련했다. 더구나 입단하자마자 두 경기 연속골을 기록한 스테보의 상승세는 수원의 부활에 청신호가 될 전망이다.

윤성효 감독도 스테보에 만족감을 드러냈다. 이달 초 브라질 출신 공격수 베르손을 내보내고 스테보를 택한 윤 감독이었다. 윤 감독은 베르손을 '아들'이라 부를 정도로 아꼈지만 베르손은 리그 8경기에 무실점을 기록, 실망스러운 모습을 보였다. 윤 감독은 부진한 최전방의 공격력을 살리기 위해 K리그에서 이미 실력이 검증된 스테보를 긴급수혈했다. 스테보는 2007년부터 세 시즌 동안 전북과 포항을 거치며 66경기서 27골을 터뜨려 수준급의 골 결정력을 뽐낸 바 있다.

윤 감독은 경기가 끝난 뒤 "스테보가 복덩이 역할을 해줘 흐름의 반전을 이뤄냈다"고 망설임 없이 말했다. 이어 스테보의 태도에 대해서도 칭찬을 쏟아냈다. 윤 감독은 "외국인 선수들은 우리와 문화도 다르고 또 바라는 게 많을 수 있다. 그런데 스테보는 한국적이다. 훈련에도 적극적으로 참여하고 감독 지시에도 귀를 기울인다. 무엇보다 팀을 위한 희생정신이 뛰어난 선수다"라고 말했다. 앞으로 스테보를 계속 '원톱'으로 기용할 것이냐는 질문에도 "그렇다"라고 시원하게 답했다.

부활의 신호탄을 쏘아 올린 수원이 K리그 우승과 아시아축구연맹(AFC) 챔피언스리그 우승이라는 '더블'을 달성할 수 있을지, 스테보의 발 끝을 주목하게 되는 이유다.
