Giants slugger catches the NPB’s eye

Lotte Giants slugger Lee Dae-ho could be going to Japan next year. Japanese media reported yesterday that at least five Nippon Professional Baseball league clubs are looking to sign Lee for next season.

According to Japanese sports daily Sports Nippon yesterday, the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles, Hanshin Tigers, Chiba Lotte Marines and other teams from the Central League are looking to bring Lee to Japan next season. The paper didn’t mention which other Central League teams are eying Lee, but sources say it is likely a three horse race among the Yomiuri Giants, Yokohama Bay Stars and Tokyo Yakult Swallows.

This is not the first time the 29-year-old has been the target of Japanese teams. About two months ago, the Japanese media reported that the Golden Eagles were moving aggressively to sign Lee, and last month there was another report from Japan that the Tigers were looking closely at the Giants’ first baseman, who will be a free agent after this KBO season.

But Sports Nippon said yesterday no team has a big advantage on the transfer deal, but speculated that the Marines might have an advantage because Lee’s Giants and the Marines are both run by Lotte Group.

The Marines, who are currently in third place in the Pacific League, are struggling on offense this season and could use a bit of Lee’s renowned power - the team has a league-worst 31 home runs.

The Marines lost star hitter Saburo Omura to Yomiuri in June and recently agreed to terminate their contract with Kim Tae-kyun who had 21 home runs and 92 RBI last year. Infielders Toshiaki Imae and Tadahito Iguchi are tied for the team lead in home runs with five.

Lee is currently considered the best hitter in Korea. He was the KBO’s triple-crown winner in 2006 and was the regular season MVP last year, leading seven offensive categories. He leads the KBO in home runs this year, with 22 as of Monday.

Sports Nippon quoted an NPB baseball expert who said Lee would make a solid addition to any Japanese club because of his power, which should help him overcome the league’s new baseball, which was introduced this year and doesn’t travel as far as the old one when hit.

The NPB has reached the halfway point of its 144-game season, but only Takeya Nakamura of the Seibu Lions has hit more than 20 home runs, with 28. There are only 14 batters who have more than 10 home runs this year.

There has yet to be any movement from Lee, who still hasn’t appointed an agent to negotiate with foreign clubs. The heavyset slugger has repeatedly said he will concentrate on this season before negotiating with his current team. But reporters close to the player said he may consider a move overseas if negotiations with the Giants don’t go well.

If Lee decides to go Japan, he will become the sixth Korean batter in history to move from the KBO to the NPB. Lee Seung-yeop of the Orix Buffaloes is the only Korean hitter currently in the NPB.

'홈런 기근' 일본, 롯데 이대호 쟁탈전 시작

홈런 기근에 시달리는 일본 프로야구가 이대호(29·롯데)에 러브콜을 보내고 있다.

일본 스포츠닛폰은 2일 '올 시즌 뒤 프리에이전트(FA) 자격을 얻는 이대호를 지바 롯데를 비롯한 여러 구단이 노릴 것'이라고 보도했다. 아울러 이 신문은 '지바 롯데 편성담당자가 이미 한국으로 건너가 이대호의 조사를 시작했다'고 전했다.

스포츠닛폰은 최대 5개 구단이 '이대호 쟁탈전'을 벌일 것으로 예상했다. 지바 롯데와 라쿠텐, 한신, 그리고 센트럴리그의 수도권팀도 흥미를 나타내고 있다고 전했다. 요미우리와 요코하마, 야쿠르트를 지칭한 것으로 보인다.

일본이 이대호를 높이 사는 이유는 역시 장타력 때문이다. 그는 지난해 44홈런을 터뜨리며 이승엽(현 오릭스) 이후 한국 최고의 홈런 타자로 떠올랐고, 올해도 홈런 1위(1일 현재 22개)를 질주하고 있다. 홈런수만 많을 뿐만 아니라 올 시즌 홈런 평균 비거리가 115.9m로 상당히 길다.

스포츠닛폰은 일본 야구 관계자의 말을 인용해 "이대호는 장타력을 갖춰 매력이 있는 선수다. (올해 도입된 저반발) 통일구에도 대응력을 갖고 있기 때문에 이대호의 영입의사를 나타내는 팀들이 많다"고 평가했다.

올해 일본은 극심한 홈런 기근 때문에 괴로워하고 있다. 공인구의 반발력을 줄인, 이른바 '날지 않는 공'을 도입했는데 홈런이 예상보다도 더 줄어든 것이다.

일본 12개 팀이 정규시즌 144경기의 절반 이상을 치른 가운데 20홈런 이상을 때린 타자는 나카무라 다케야(세이부·28홈런)밖에 없다. 현재 홈런 12개면 양대 리그 어디에서든 홈런 3위에 오를 수 있다. 홈런 10개 이상을 때린 타자가 센트럴리그에 8명, 퍼시픽리그에 6명뿐이다. 특히 지바 롯데와 라쿠텐이 속한 퍼시픽리그 외국인 타자 중에는 호세 페르난데스(세이부·10홈런)만이 두자리수 홈런을 때렸다.

일본은 '국가대표 이대호' 또는 '2010년 타격 7관왕 이대호'가 아닌 '저반발 공에 대처할 수 있는 이대호'에 관심을 갖고 있다. 합리적인 근거를 가지고 이대호를 평가하고 있다는 느낌이다. '날지 않는 공'이 일본의 홈런수를 떨어뜨렸지만, 이대호에겐 오히려 호재로 작용할 전망이다.

이대호는 아직 '정중동(靜中動)' 하고 있다. 해외 구단과 협상할 에이전트를 선임하지 않은 채 시즌에 집중하고 있다. 소속팀 롯데와의 협상이 우선이라는 원칙을 세우고 있지만 여의치 않을 경우 해외진출 의사도 갖고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.
