Bolt looks to defend World titles

DAEGU - Usain Bolt, dubbed the fastest man on earth, has set his sights on one goal at the upcoming World Championships in Athletics in Daegu - to defend his world titles so he can become “a legend.”

“I am trying to defend my titles - that’s my aim,” Bolt said in an interview with Yonhap News Agency on Saturday. “I want to show the world that I may be coming back from injuries, but I am still the best. I am a confident young man and I want to do well.”

This year’s World Championships will kick off on Saturday for a nine-day run, with nearly 3,000 athletes from 206 countries. Daegu, 300 kilometers (186 miles) southeast of Seoul, is the first-time host of the signature event by the International Association of Athletics Federations.

Bolt, who turned 25 yesterday, won the men’s 100 meters and 200 meters, and helped Jamaica to the 4x100 relay title at the previous world championships in Berlin in 2009. In the process, Bolt set world records of 9.58 seconds in the 100 and 19.19 seconds in the 200, breaking his own marks set at the Beijing Olympics a year earlier.

If Bolt wins both of those races in Daegu, he will become the first athlete to complete the 100-200 double in consecutive World Championships.

But Bolt struggled in 2010 with back and Achilles’ tendon injuries, forcing him to shut down in August. He has been battling the aftereffects of the injuries this year.

His best time in the 100 this year is only 9.88, the seventh best, while fellow countryman Asafa Powell owns the fastest time at 9.78. Bolt does own the best 200 time this season at 19.86, but it’s still well off his world record.

But Bolt said he is “focused and ready” to win the titles here and to be remembered as more than just a champion.

“I want to be a legend,” he said. “People have said I am a legend already because I’ve done so well in Beijing and Berlin. But personally, I think I need to defend my titles. So that’s what I want to do. I want to .?.?. show the world that I am the best, and then break more records and do great things.”

Bolt acknowledged he has “been through a lot for the past couple of years” and he’s still building himself into “race-perfect” shape.

“I am working hard to stay focused and to get it right,” he said. “I try not to put too much pressure on myself.”

Bolt, a brash athlete known as much for his exploits on the track as for his over-the-top post-victory celebrations, said his recent hiccups haven’t affected his confidence.

“Mentally, I am always a strong person. I am always focused and I am always ready,” he said. “I didn’t get as much [live action] as I wanted early in the season to really get back on top. But I am still the greatest.”

Bolt may have a relatively easy path to the top of the podium. Tyson Gay, his archrival and the 2005 world champion from the U.S., will not run in Daegu because of a hip injury, and Powell pulled out of a race earlier this month with groin pains.

Two other sprinters, Jamaica’s Steve Mullings and U.S. runner Mike Rodgers, failed drug tests and will not compete here. Mullings has the third-best 100 time in 2011 at 9.80, and Rodgers ranks fourth at 9.85.

Bolt said his sole aim in Daegu is to win the titles and that world records can come later.

“People will be looking for me to break records, but the truth is I am not in that shape,” he said. “If everything goes well next season and I am injury-free and I work as hard as I am supposed to work, I should be able to break my records.”

우사인 볼트, 100m 기록 달성 변수는?

우사인 볼트(25·자메이카)의 남자 100m 세계신기록 달성은 대구세계육상선수권대회 최고의 관심사 중 하나다. 볼트가 세계신기록을 작성하기 위해서는 넘어야 할 산들이 많다.

일단 볼트의 컨디션이 썩 좋지 않다. 그는 지난해 허리와 아킬레스건 부상으로 고전했다. 올해 개인최고기록이 9초88로 자신이 세운 세계기록(9초58·2009년 베를린세계선수권)에 크게 못 미친다. 지금은 2012년 런던올림픽을 위해 서서히 단계를 밟아나가는 과정이다. 볼트도 "부상 탓에 시즌을 늦게 시작하다보니 몸을 끌어올리기 위해 단계를 밟아야 했다. 그런 상황 때문에 기술이 무뎌진 부분이 있다"고 인정했다.

볼트는 지난 16일 한국에 입국할 당시 예민한 탓인지 얼굴이 굳어있었다. 피곤한 듯한 표정으로 잘 웃지 않았다. 20일 대구 현대백화점에서 스폰서 푸마가 주최한 이벤트에 참여할 때도 간간이 미소를 보였지만 굳은 표정을 풀지 않았다. 주변의 기대에 부응하고 타이틀 방어에 성공해야 한다는 중압감이 어느 때보다 심한 상황이다. 볼트는 "내가 잘 웃지 않았던 것은 이기기 위한 준비다. 긴장한 것은 아니다"며 여전히 특유의 자신감을 내보였다.

경쟁자인 아사파 파월(29·자메이카)은 타이틀 방어 및 기록 달성에 커다란 자극제가 될 것으로 보인다. 자메이카 대표팀으로 한솥밥을 먹는 사이지만 경기를 앞두고는 훈련장도 따로 쓰는 등 신경전이 대단하다. 개인훈련에 열중하다 볼트보다 일주일 가량 늦은 22일 대구에 도착해 현지 적응에 들어갔다. 올해 개인최고기록은 9초78로 볼트의 기록보다 0.1초 앞선다.

파월은 21일 영국 일간 가디언과의 인터뷰에서 "세계선수권에 처음 출전한지 9년이 흘렀다. 그동안 한번도 우승을 하지 못해 굶주렸다. 우승에 배고픈 사람이다"며 강한 의지를 드러냈다. 볼트로선 최상의 컨디션이 아닌 상황에서 최대 경쟁자가 칼을 갈고 있으니 더욱 신경이 쓰일 수 밖에 없다.

경기 당일 날씨도 기록에 큰 영향을 미친다. 올해는 전반적으로 고온다습한 날씨가 이어지고 있다. 이는 단거리와 필드 종목 선수들에게는 유리한 점이 있다. 기온과 습도가 높고 기압이 낮을수록 공기의 밀도가 낮아져 저항이 덜 생긴다. 평지에서 뛰어도 고지에서 뛰는 효과를 누릴 수 있게 된다. 기상청은 8월 하순 대구의 강우 확률과 기온이 평년보다 높을 것으로 예상하고 있다.
