Genuine mournfulness

On an unseasonably cold and windy day, Prime Minister Kim Hwang-sik and former Grand National Party chairwoman Park Geun-hye remembered the victims of the deadly shelling of frontline island, Yeonpyeong.

The sky was clouded and for a few minutes sprayed icy rain on the ceremony commemorating the first anniversary of the attack by the North Korean military.

The temperature suddenly dropped as the raindrops thickened. The chief security guard opened an umbrella for the prime minister. But Kim brushed it away.

He stood solemnly in the rain beside the mourning families. He laid flowers on the graves of the martyred soldiers, his suit soaked with rain. But not once did he flinch.

A father of one of the murdered soldiers commented that he could feel the sincerity of the prime minister from his disposition that day.

In a telephone interview, Moon Young-jo, father of the late Private First Class Moon Gwang-ok, said the prime minister had no care for the cold or rain, but just genuine empathy for the pain and loss felt by the families of the victims.

He added that some of the country’s other leaders should take after Kim. Moon, another marine and two civilians were killed when North Korea’s military fired a barrage of artillery at Yeongpyeong Island in protest of a South Korean naval drill.

In his address to the families and soldiers stationed on the island, Kim said “As I stand here with you, the shock and pain of that tragic day rushes back and I am overwhelmed with sadness and sorrow.” They were not just flowery words. Kim’s attitude showed that he meant every one of them.

Moon said he was touched by the prime minister’s sincere words of consolation.

Some people in cyberspace criticized the whole event as a political gesture. Their response is understandable as sincerity and decency has been found wanting from government officials.

Nobody from the main opposition Democratic Party was present at the event except the governor of the South Chungcheong Province. The party issued a short statement through a deputy speaker, advising the government and military to be more careful and thorough in defense of the nation.

It warned North Korea not to dare commit any more military provocations. There was a clear difference between the prime minister and the DP leadership. One cared and the other did not.

23일 오전 대전 국립현충원에선 김황식 국무총리와 한나라당 박근혜 전 대표 등이 참석한 가운데 ‘연평도 포격도발 전사장병·희생자 1주기 추모식’이 열렸다. 행사가 시작된 지 10분쯤 뒤엔 하늘이 흐려지면서 비를 뿌렸다. 빗줄기는 금세 굵어져 장대비로 바뀌었고, 기온은 뚝뚝 떨어졌다. 참석자들이 우산을 쓰기 시작하자 총리실 경호팀장도 김 총리 머리 위로 우산을 펼쳐 들었다. 김 총리는 “괜찮다. 치우라”고 했다. 그리고는 행사가 끝날 때까지 30분 가량 고스란히 비를 맞았다. 추모식장에서뿐 아니라 전사자들의 묘역을 찾아 헌화를 했을 때도 비를 피하지 않았다. 빗물이 얼굴을 타고 흘러내리고, 빗물에 옷이 흥건하게 젖었음에도 김 총리의 행동엔 흐트러짐이 없었다고 한다.
그런 그를 보고 고(故) 문광옥 일병의 부친인 문영조씨는 “진정성을 느낄 수 있었다”고 했다. 문씨는 통화에서 “비가 많이 내린 데다 날도 몹시 추웠는데 총리는 개의치 않고 진심으로 희생자들을 추모하고 유가족들의 아픔과 고통을 함께 나누려는 모습을 보였다”며 “다른 지도자들도 본받으면 좋겠다”고 말했다.
김 총리는 추도사에서 “오늘 이 자리에 서니 그날의 아픔이 되살아나는 듯 슬프고 고통스럽기 그지 없다”고 했다. 이 말이 진심임을 그는 행동으로 보여줬다. 문씨가 “총리의 언행에서 위로를 받았다”고 한 건 감동을 느꼈기 때문일 것이다. 일부 네티즌이 “쇼라고 해도 보기 좋았다”고 한 건 김 총리처럼 처신한 정부 고위층을 별로 보지 못했기 때문일 것이다.
추모식에 민주당 지도부는 모습을 드러내지 않았다. 안희정 충남지사만 참석했을 뿐 손학규 대표나 정동영·정세균 최고위원 등 민주당을 이끄는 이들의 얼굴은 보이지 않았다. 민주당이 북한의 연평도 포격도발 1주년과 관련해 이날 한 일은 대변인도 아닌 부대변인 이름의 논평 하나를 발표한 게 전부다. “군은 당시 북의 기습공격에 허둥대던 것을 교훈 삼아 주도면밀한 대비태세를 갖출 것을 당부한다. 북한도 다시는 무모한 도발을 감행하지 말 것을 엄중히 경고한다”는 내용이다. 김 총리와 민주당의 태도는 비교가 된다. 진정성에 차이가 있기 때문이다.
