It all depends on your mind

You wrote love letters every day for three years, but the girl you wanted married the mailman. After all, things don’t go as you wish no matter how hard you try. In life, you need luck. A knowledgeable commander is superior to a courageous general, and a virtuous general is better than a knowledgeable one. And a lucky commander is greater than a virtuous one. That’s why the fortune tellers enjoy a high season at the beginning of the year, as people want to gauge their luck in the new year.

A friend of mine likes to visit fortune tellers and believes it’s very entertaining to make a small investment to hear what the fortune tellers say about his fate, adding that he only believes half of it. He claimed that the fortune tellers in Korea have replaced the role of counseling and therapy in Western culture in many ways. I personally had my horoscope data analyzed, but I am not sure about how well this could predict the future.

However, I believe in one saying: the shape of the foot is more telling than the lines of the palm, the face features are more evident than the foot and bone structure is more related to fate than the face.

But all these features are not as closely associated with fate as is mindset. All the fortune, misery, happiness and trouble originate from your mind, so we need to remember this saying.

Personality assessments such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) must have been devised in order to figure out what’s going on in our minds. Steve Jobs, who passed away in 2011, is likely to fall into the ENTP type among the 16 possible variations. An ENTP type is a person who thinks and perceives extrovertedly and intuitively.

The more complicated a problem is, the easier it is to motivate an ENTP to resolve it, and ENTPs dislike boring or repetitive work. Also, ENTPs act strictly according to their own judgment, so the description certainly fits Steve Jobs. Personally, I also find the Enneagram of Personality to be convincing.

If personal fate depends on the mindset of the individual, the destiny of the state is determined by the collective mindset of the citizens. The Year of the Black Dragon has begun, but the principles remain the same. There is no predetermined fate for the country. It all depends on us to make the year as auspicious and prosperous as we can for Korea.

짝사랑하는 처녀에게 꼬박 3년 간 연애편지를 써 보냈더니 처녀가 우체부(집배원)와 결혼하더란다. 사람 일이 무작정 노력한다고 다 잘 풀리는 건 아니다. 운도 따라줘야 한다. ‘용장(勇將) 위에 지장(智將) 있고 지장 위에 덕장(德將) 있으며, 덕장 위에 복장(福將)이 있다’는 속설도 그래서 나왔을 것이다. 매년 해가 바뀔 때마다 역술가들이 대목을 맞는 이치다.
점집 순례를 즐기는 한 지인은 “약간의 투자로 농반진반 삼아 운명을 들어보는 재미가 쏠쏠하다”고 예찬론을 편다. “서구의 정신과 상담에 해당하는 역할을 우리나라에서는 점집이 상당 부분 대신하는 셈”이라는 말도 한다. 나도 두어 번 사주풀이를 받아 본 적은 있지만, 솔직히 미래예측 효과에 대해선 긴가민가다. 제 앞길을 남이 알아봐 주길 기대하는 자체가 애초부터 허망한 일이라 하겠다.
그래도 한 가지 믿는 문구가 있다. ‘수상(手相)보다는 족상(足相), 족상보다는 관상(觀相), 관상보다는 골상(骨相)이지만, 이 모든 상은 심상(心相)만 못하다’는 말이다. 자신의 마음가짐에서 모든 길흉화복(吉凶禍福)이 비롯된다는 경구이니 가슴에 담아둘 만하다.
이 ‘마음’을 알아보기 위해 심리학에 바탕을 둔 MBTI 인성검사 같은 게 생겼다고 본다. 전문가들은 지난해 10월 타계한 스티브 잡스는 MBTI의 16가지 성격유형 중 ENTP형에 속한다고 본다. 외향적·직관적으로 사고·인지하는 인간형이다. 복잡한 문제일수록 쉽게 해결하고 지루하게 반복되는 일을 싫어하며, 철저하게 자기 판단에 따라 행동하는 유형이라니 수긍이 간다. 개인적으로는 애니어그램 성격유형 테스트도 상당한 타당성이 있다고 느낀다.
개인사가 마음가짐에 달렸다면 나랏일도 구성원들의 마음과 마음이 운명을 가르는 게 당연하다. 임진년(壬辰年) 흑룡(黑龍)의 해가 시작됐어도 원리는 변하지 않는다. 바로 직전 임진년(1952년)은 6·25 전란의 와중이었지만 우리는 첫 기초 지방의회 의원 선거와 2대 대통령·3대 부통령 선거를 치러냈다. 120년 전 임진년에 태어난 국내·외 인물도 신익희·이광수에서 생체실험의 원흉 이시이 시로 731부대장(일본)에 이르기까지 천차만별이다. 흑룡의 해라고 유별날 게 없다. 새로운 해가 시작됐을 뿐 미리 정해진 국운은 없다. 운은 우리가 만들기에 달렸다.
