JTBC to air WBC games as int’l qualifiers begin

JTBC will televise the two remaining qualifying rounds of the World Baseball Classic that start today.

The broadcasting channel of the JoongAng Media Network won exclusive rights to broadcast the WBC in Korea in a deal with MP & Silva, the media rights agency for the quadrennial baseball tournament, last month.

One regional qualifying round featuring Panama, Brazil, Nicaragua and Colombia will be held in Panama City from Nov. 15 to 19.

Another qualifying round with Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines and New Zealand will be held in New Taipei City, Taiwan, from Nov. 15 to 18.

JTBC will televise live the final games of the two qualifying groups at 3 p.m. on Sunday for the Asia region and 10 a.m. next Tuesday for the Latin American region. All other qualifiers will be recorded and aired between Friday and Tuesday from 1 a.m.

The top 12 teams from the 2009 Classic have automatically earned berths to the main tournament, which begins in March.

Four other teams will also compete in March after a four-group, 16-team qualification round. Spain and Canada won their respective qualifying groups in September.

Korea, the 2009 runner-up, will start its main tournament campaign in Group B in March against the Netherlands, Australia and the winner of a qualification round. If it is among the two best teams in the group, Korea will face the winners of the Group A, which are likely to be Japan and Cuba.
