Han So-hee's success has her questioning the meaning of love

After debuting in the SBS drama series “Reunited Worlds” in 2017, Han So-hee thought she'd finally gotten her big break. But it wasn't until she landed a role in the JTBC series “The World of the Married” that the actor shot to stardom.

After “The World” ended with a flourish of success and became Korea’s most-watched cable drama, it wasn't only the leads — Kim Hee-ae and Park Hae-jun — that found themselves in the spotlight, but the entire cast.

And no one more so than Han, who took on the role of Yeo Da-kyung. Yeo is the mistress of Park's character, Tae-oh, who then becomes his wife.

As the series aired, Yeo's character was criticized for her actions while Han was simultaneously applauded for her superb performance that was on par with her veteran cast mates, Kim and Park.

“I saw the YouTube clip in which YouTuber Park Mak-rye comments that [the drama series] is not ‘The World of the Married,’ but it’s ‘The World of the Wacko,’” the actor said in an interview with the JoonAng Ilbo, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily, at a cafe in Nonhyeon-dong, southern Seoul, last week. “Even my grandmother didn’t side with Yeo, but I still felt happy. The reason why I decided to become an actor was due to my grandmother because she enjoyed watching television, and I loved that she could see more of me through the screen.”

Although Han was showered with praise throughout the series, she wasn’t satisfied with her performance, “not even 1 percent.” When she watched the original BBC drama series “Doctor Foster,” on which "The World" is based, she was sure the adaptation would see popularity in Korea. However, she wasn't so sure of her own abilities.

“I was afraid that I would become a hassle to the series,” Han said. “Since the directors, writers and other actors were all experts, I thought I was the weak link. And I came to realize that no matter how hard I tried, I could never reduce the gap [that exists between a veteran and a rookie] which comes from years of experience. [For instance], I thought there were only two ways to portray sadness, but when Sun-woo [played by Kim] walks into the ocean [after she thinks she has lost everything], there was a sense of relief, joy, even security [in her despair]. [After I saw that scene] I realized that I still had a long way to go, and tried to follow their [senior actors’] footsteps as best as I could, determined not to lag behind.”

When it came to her character, she struggled the most with trying to figure out “why Da-kyung loves Tae-oh.”

“The assumption that I’d reached was that she loved him not because he was married, but she loved him and he just happened to be married,” Han said. “Da-kyung grew up in a kind of environment where she’d never lacked anything — her parents provided everything for her, so she didn’t have any goal or future planned. Then she met Tae-oh, who, despite lacking assets, was really passionate about his work.”

It wasn’t Han's first time playing a character involved in a scandal. In her previous roles “Money Flower” (2017-18) on MBC and “100 Days My Prince” (2018) on tvN, both her characters were involved in affairs.

“Although the roles may seem similar, their specific stories are totally different, and it was a new challenge for me to portray them differently,” the actor said. “I don’t know, maybe I give off this aura that I have a lot on my plate. For my next role, I want to be someone who grew up in a normal family, where both of my parents are alive, and where there are no murderers or criminals.”

When asked about the possibility of a second season, the actor thinks that there’s no story left for Da-kyung.

“I don’t think she could fall in love again after she’s been through such a nightmare,” Han said.

“Maybe there could be a story somewhere for Je-hyuk [played by Kim Young-min] who didn’t repent for his actions.”

With her newfound fame also came some unwanted attention as photos of her past, in which she's smoking and her tattoos are on show, began circulating online. Han was unfazed.

“People are interested [in those photos] because the series was such a hit,” Han said.

“Me in those photos and the current me are all part of myself and I don’t think [anyone] could say that they are wrong or bad. I don’t even know if I’m on the right path now. But after this series, my thoughts on marriage definitely veered closer to not to [marry]. Seeing my married friends with kids immersed in ‘The World’ to the point where [the obsession] affected their lives, I don’t know. [Affairs] could happen to anyone, and maybe someday I will marry for love, but through this series, I realized that a relationship between a married couple can’t be successful through love alone."

Han emphasized that this is just “the beginning” for her career. After she graduated high school she came to Seoul alone and earned a living through various part-time jobs while auditioning.

“I still think about those times sometimes to brace myself,” Han said. “When I was overwhelmed with the part-time jobs, I didn’t even know what color I liked. But as I started modeling, I learned about what I liked and how to portray my emotions. When it came to the point where I could have the leisure to think about my own preferences, I started a blog to record my daily life as a youth living in this generation. Actors may seem like something special, but we’re all the same — we eat, worry about living expenses and plan for the future. I want to grow slowly but steadily, without getting cocky or arrogant.”

한소희 “흡연·타투 논란? 과거도 나의 일부, 틀린 것 아냐"

“박막례 할머니께서 ‘부부의 세계’가 아니라 ‘또라이의 세계’라고 말씀하신 영상을 봤어요. 다들 그렇게 보고 계시는구나 싶었던 게 저희 할머니도 끝까지 제 편을 안 들어주시더라고요. 너는 도대체 애가 왜 그러냐면서. 작가님이 그렇게 쓰신 거다 말씀드려도 막무가내죠. 그래도 기분은 좋더라고요. TV를 즐겨보시는 할머니 덕분에 배우를 꿈꾸게 됐는데 TV에 자주 나오니 효도하는 기분도 들고요.”

25일 서울 논현동에서 만난 배우 한소희(26)는 홀가분한 모습이었다. 비지상파 드라마 최고 시청률(28.4%)로 종영한 JTBC ‘부부의 세계’(극본 주현, 연출 모완일)에서 불륜녀 여다경 역을 맡아 욕은 실컷 먹었지만 그만큼 인기도 올라갔기 때문이다. 극 초반 유부남 이태오(박해준)와 사랑에 빠졌을 때만 해도 화려한 외모로 관심을 모았던 그는, 후반부로 갈수록 한층 깊어진 감정 연기로 화제가 됐다. 2017년 드라마 ‘다시 만난 세계’로 연기에 처음 도전한 지 3년 만에 ‘대세 배우’ 반열에 들어선 것이다.

방영 내내 호평이 쏟아졌지만 정작 그는 자신의 연기에 “1%도 만족하지 못했다”고 했다. 영국 BBC 원작 ‘닥터 포스터’를 보면서부터 성공을 확신했지만 “혹여 작품에 누를 끼칠까 두려웠다”고. “감독님도, 작가님도, 선배님들도 다 잘하시니 저만 잘하면 된다고 생각했어요. 그런데 경험에서 나오는 노하우를 따라갈 수가 없더라고요. 저는 슬픔을 표현하는 방법이 두 갈래인 줄 알았는데 지선우(김희애)가 바다에 들어가는 신을 보니 그 안에 환희도 있고, 후련함도 있고, 안정감도 있고, 다섯 갈래 정도는 되더라고요. 그래서 아직 갈 길이 멀구나, 선배들의 스텝을 잘 쫓아가자, 뒤처지지만 말자 하면서 악착같이 버텼던 것 같아요.”

그가 가장 고민한 부분은 ‘왜 여다경은 이태오를 사랑하는가’에 대한 답을 찾는 것이었다. “유부남 이태오를 사랑하는 것이 아니라 내가 사랑하는 이태오가 유부남”이라는 전제를 만들고서 감정을 쌓아가기 시작했다. “금수저 여다경은 특별한 꿈도, 미래도 없는데 맨땅에 헤딩하는 이태오의 열정에 끌리지 않았겠냐”고 덧붙였다. “사실 원작에서 같은 배역을 맡았던 조디 코머와 닮았다는 얘기를 많이 들었어요. 이미지가 비슷해서 제작진과 첫 미팅을 할 수 있었고요. 더구나 한국판에서는 2년 뒤 다경이 훨씬 더 성숙해져서 돌아오잖아요. 선우와 대립하면서도 동질감도 있고. 처음 병원에서 대면하는 신부터 묘하게 거울로 서로를 보는 것 같은 느낌이 들었는데 워맨스로 해석하는 분들도 많더라고요. 케미가 좋은가보다 했죠.”

반면 엄마 연기는 전작 ‘돈꽃’(2017~2018)과 ‘백일의 낭군님’(2018)의 경험이 있어 어렵지 않았다고. “제가 결혼을 하거나 아이를 낳아본 적은 없지만, 누구나 아킬레스건 같은 존재가 있잖아요. ‘부부의 세계’에서 준영이 집을 나가는 것은 태오가 떠나는 것과 마찬가지로 다경의 삶 전체가 무너져내리는 거니까 절대 잃어서는 안 되는 소중한 존재를 대입해서 연기했어요. 저한테는 가족, 그중에서도 특히 할머니가 그런 존재예요. 부모님이 맞벌이를 하셔서 할머니와 함께 보낸 시간이 많았거든요.”

잇따라 불륜녀 역할을 맡은 것에 대해서는 “큰 틀은 같아도, 세부적인 이야기는 전혀 다르다. 각각의 캐릭터를 표현하는 것 자체가 새로운 도전이었다”고 답했다. “제가 사연 있어 보이나 봐요. 다음에는 엄마 아빠 다 살아 계시고, 살인마도 범죄자도 아니고, 정말 평범한 가정에서 자라 평범한 사랑을 하는 캐릭터를 연기해 보고 싶어요. 꼭 사랑이 아니어도 우정, 워맨스, 청춘물도 좋고요.” ‘부부의 세계’ 시즌 2 가능성에 대해서는 “이 모든 전쟁을 겪고 난 다경이 다시 사랑에 빠지진 않을 것 같다”며 “아직도 반성하지 않은 손제혁(김영민)의 이야기는 만들어질 수 있지 않을까 싶다”고 말했다.

흡연ㆍ타투 등 온라인상에서 화제가 된 과거 사진에 대해서도 쿨한 태도를 보였다. “작품이 잘 되니까 관심을 가져주신 거잖아요. 그때의 나도, 지금의 나도 모두 나인데 어떤 게 나쁘다거나 틀렸다고 할 순 없죠. 지금도 옳게 살고 있는 건지 잘 모르겠거든요. 제니(이로은) 또래의 아이를 가진 친구들이 일상생활이 힘들 정도로 ‘부부의 세계’에 몰입하는 것을 보면서 비혼에 더 가까워지는 것 같기도 해요. 누구든 겪을 수 있는 일이니까요. 저 역시 감정적인 사람이라 언젠가 사랑을 좇아 결혼할 수도 있겠지만, 이번 작품을 하면서 부부라는 게 사랑으로만 이뤄질 수 있는 관계가 아니라는 생각을 많이 해서 쉽진 않을 것 같아요.”

그는 배우로서 한소희는 “이제 시작”이라고 강조했다. 울산에서 나고 자라 고등학교 졸업 후 홀로 서울로 올라와 아르바이트를 전전했던 그는 “지금도 종종 그때 생각을 하며 마음을 다잡는다”고 했다. “매일 아르바이트에 치여 살 때는 제가 무슨 색깔을 좋아하는지도 몰랐어요. 그런데 모델 일을 처음 하면서 이런 옷을 입으면 기분이 좋구나, 이렇게 감정을 표현할 수도 있구나 하면서 취향이 생기고 꿈이 생겨난 거죠. 좋아하는 게 뭔지 생각할 수 있는 여유가 생긴 시점부터 블로그를 시작한 것도 이 시대를 살아가는 청춘으로서 일상을 기록하기 위해서였어요. 배우라는 직업이 특별해 보이지만 똑같이 밥 먹고, 생활비 걱정하고, 내년 계획 세우고 하니까요. 그래서 천천히 튼튼하게 잘 성장하고 싶어요. 절대로 오만방자해지지 않고.”
