In March, news hit the headlines that, for the first time in history, a soldier involved in the crack down on Gwangju demonstrators during the May 18 Democratic Movement in 1980, publicly apologized to the family of the victim he had shot and killed.

지난 3월, 1980년 5·18 민주화 운동 당시 광주 진압작전에 참여했던 군인이 총격으로 사망한 피해자의 유가족에게 사상 최초로 공개 사과한 것이 언론에 대서특필되었다.

The film “In the Name of the Son,” which is set to premiere on Wednesday, tells the story of soldier Oh Chae-geun and his struggle with the guilt he feels for the lives he took in Gwangju decades after the uprising.

수요일에 개봉할 예정인 영화 “아들의 이름으로”는 본인이 광주에서 빼앗은 목숨에 대해 수십년 후에도 죄책감에 시달리는 오채근이라는 군인의 이야기이다.

Chae-geun becomes enraged with the commanders above him who are living guilt-free while the residents of Gwangju are still scarred.

Actor Ahn Sung-ki portrays Chae-geun, a complex character who is both a perpetrator and a victim, without romanticizing or justifying his wrongdoings.

배우 안성기는 채근의 잘못에 대한 미화나 합리화 없이 가해자이자 피해자인 복잡한 캐릭터를 연기한다.

It’s the second film about the May 18 movement that Ahn appeared in after “May 18” in 2007.

이 영화는 배우 안성기의 두번째 5·18 민주화 운동 관련 영화로, 2007년작 “화려한 휴가” 다음이다.

But this time, there's no pay check for Ahn, who chose to appear in the small-budget independent film free of charge.

하지만 이번에 안성기는 이 저예산 독립영화에 무보수로 출연하기로 했다.

“It was the script which drew me in,” Ahn said during an online interview last week. “I liked the story that was told by this character Oh Chae-geun, which is why I decided to appear in the film just a day after I received the script.”

안성기는 지난 주 화상 인터뷰에서 “대본이 나를 끌어들였다”고 말했다. “오채근이라는 캐릭터를 통해 전달되는 이야기가 마음에 들어서 대본을 받은 바로 다음날 출연을 결정했다”고 한다.

As a more experienced member of the cast, Ahn said he felt that the entire atmosphere was influenced by his mood and actions, which is why he tried to be upbeat during filming.

안성기는 경험이 많은 출연자로써 자신의 기분과 행동이 전체 분위기에 영향을 준다고 생각하여 촬영 내내 쾌활한 태도로 임했다.

“There were a lot of hurdles [because of the low budget] from the beginning to the end,” he said.

hurdle: 장애물

그는 “(적은 예산 탓에) 처음부터 끝까지 장애물이 많았다”고 밝혔다.

“I think it was the first time that I’ve been in a film where there were no separate teams for make-up and costumes. We [the actors] had to each prepare our own clothes for filming. And I felt that if I was moody for even for a moment, the entire atmosphere on the set would be swayed. So I tried my best to stay cheery.”

그는 “분장팀이나 의상팀이 따로 없는 영화는 처음 작업해봤다. 우리는 (배우들은) 촬영 때 각자 입을 옷을 준비해야 했다. 그리고 내가 잠시라도 기분이 안 좋으면 촬영장 전체의 분위기가 흔들리는 게 느껴져서 스스로 쾌활한 상태를 유지하도록 노력했다.” 라고 말했다.
