“We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive.”

Anonymous is a hacker group which operates under a veil, as the name indicates. It is known to have formed in a chat room. There is no visible organization or leader. It is an open and close group and anyone who supports the cause can pose as a member.

The logo and symbol of Anonymous is a white mask with a strange smile. The mask is based on Guy Fawkes, who installed explosives in the British Parliament to kill King James I and members of the House of Lords. The failed terrorist is a symbol of resistance in Britain.

Anonymous came up with its name as it waged a war against American religious group Scientology in 2008. In 2009, it attempted an attack on Iranian government websites. The group supported the Arab Spring and attacked Tunisian, Egyptian and Libyan government sites in 2011. At the height of the Occupy Wall Street movement, it paralyzed the New York Stock Exchange. In 2012, Anonymous was selected as one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine.

Anonymous posted a video on YouTube on June 5. It is titled “Anonymous Message to Elon Musk.” An anonymous figure wearing a Guy Fawkes mask said, “It seems that the games you have played with the crypto markets have destroyed lives,” and “your tweets this week show a clear disregard for the average working person.” The masked figure warned, “You may think you are the smartest person in the room, but now you have met your match. We are Anonymous! We are Legion! Expect us.”

Musk’s recent tweets swayed the cryptocurrency market. A few hours before the Anonymous’ video was posted, he sent explicit tweets, and adult-themed cryptocurrencies rallied by 350 percent. When he put a bitcoin hashtag on an image of a couple breaking up, the price of bitcoin plummeted. Can Anonymous make Musk stop playing with tweets? In Korea and many other countries, only individual investors are suffering.

어나니머스(Anonymous, 익명)는 그 이름처럼 베일에 가린 해커조직이다. 2003년 한 채팅 사이트 포챈(4chan)을 중심으로 형성된 것으로 알려졌다. 눈에 보이는 조직이나 리더는 없다. 뜻을 같이한다면 누구나 어나니머스를 자칭해 활동할 수 있는 개방적이고 느슨한 조직이다.

이들의 로고이자 상징은 미묘한 미소를 짓고 있는 하얀 가면이다. 1605년 당시 영국의 왕이었던 제임스 1세와 가족·의원들을 몰살시키기 위해 영국 의회에 폭약을 설치했던 가이 포크스라는 실존 인물을 본떠 만들었다. 실패한 테러리스트 포크스는 이후 영국에서 저항의 상징으로 여겨졌다.

어나니머스가 명성을 날리기 시작한 건 2008년 미국 종교단체인 사이언톨로지와 전쟁을 벌이면서부터다. 2009년에는 정보 검열이 심했던 이란 정부 사이트에 디도스 공격을 시도했다. '아랍의 봄' 운동이 일던 2011년에는 아랍 민주화운동에 대한 지지 선언을 했으며 튀니지·이집트·리비아 정부 웹사이트를 공격했다. ‘월가를 점령하라’ 시위가 한창이던 때는 뉴욕증권 거래소를 마비시켰다. 2012년에는 타임지가 선정하는 ‘세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 인물’에서 1위를 차지하기도 했다.

어나니머스가 지난 5일(현지시간) 유튜브에 한 영상을 올렸다. 제목은 ‘머스크에게 보내는 어나니머스 메시지’다. 포크스 가면을 쓰고 나온 익명의 인물은 영상에서 머스크를 향해 “당신이 가상화폐 시장에서 하는 놀이 때문에 여러 삶이 파괴됐다. 세계 노동계층의 대다수가 무엇 때문에 힘들어하는지 감도 없을 것”이라고 했다. 이어 “당신은 자신이 가장 똑똑한 사람이라 생각하겠지만 이제 임자 만났다. 우리는 어나니머스다”라며 경고했다.

최근 머스크의 트윗은 가상화폐 시장의 등락을 좌우했다. 어나니머스의 경고 영상이 올라오기 몇 시간 전에도 그는 노골적인 음란 트윗을 날렸고, 이에 성인물 가상화폐가 350% 폭등했다. 이별하는 연인의 이미지에 비트코인 해시태그를 달자 비트코인 가격이 하락하는 현상도 벌어졌다. 상황이 이런데도 그의 엄지손가락은 하루에 몇번이고 트윗을 날리고 있다. 어나니머스는 과연 머스크의 장난스런 트윗을 멈출 수 있을까? 한국에서도, 외국에서도 고통은 결국 개미들의 몫일 뿐이다.
