Web series production studio Playlist has busy year ahead
Playlist will present 13 shows this year, the web series production studio announced Monday.
The first was noir series “Hope or Dope,” which launched on video streaming platform Seezn on March 25. The story follows an 18-year-old girl, played by actor Won Ji-an, who hides in the countryside after being used as a drug mule by her parents. She meets a local boy, played by actor Yoon Chan-young, and his friends, and discovers a field of marijuana plants.
“Newnormalzine,” a series about female editors at an online magazine, will launch in the first half of 2022. Other series, including romantic comedy “While You Are Drunk” (translated), timeslip fantasy “World Cup Baby” and “Unfollow” about star Instagram influencers, will follow. The studio is currently in negotiations regarding which streaming platform will distribute them.
Several series will be based on Naver Webtoons and web novels, such as “Weak Hero,” “Seasons of Blossom,” “Secret Playlist,” “Back to You” and “Deal” (translated).
A romance series titled “From Somenam to Getnam” (translated) will select 10 episodes from famous web novel authors and recreate them into one series.
“This is the year that Playlist has started officially presenting original content and well-made medium-to-long dramas,” said CEO of the production studio Park Tae-won. “This will be the first year of Playlist becoming not just a series production company, but a comprehensive studio.”
Playlist was founded in 2017 by Naver Webtoon and Snow, a software subsidiary of Naver. It has 14.9 million subscribers around the world.
