Ryu Hyun-jin of the Toronto Blue Jays picked up his second win of the season on Thursday, beating the Los Angeles Angels on the road in a highly-anticipated showdown with Japanese dual-threat Shohei Ohtani.

Ryu gave up two runs on six hits in five innings pitched at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California on Thursday, striking out one and giving up one walk for his first win of the season.

Although Ryu only got the one strikeout, it was a hugely symbolic one — taking down Ohtani himself at the bottom of the fifth inning.

Ryu got plenty of batting support, with George Springer opening the game at the top of the first inning with a solo home run. The Blue Jays added three more at the top of the third, then added two more in the sixth and ninth to end the game with six runs.

Ryu held the Angels off for the first two innings before giving up two runs at the bottom of the third, allowing three singles with no outs to start off the inning. The Angels added one more run at the bottom of the ninth to end the game 6-3.

Ryu faced one of the most formidable opponents in baseball today in the form of Ohtani, a dominant starting pitcher who also plays as his own designated hitter and appears as either designated hitter or an outfielder on days when he isn't needed on the mound. The Japanese two-way star was the 2021 American League MVP and during that season became the first player in history to record both 100 innings pitched and 100 strikeouts and 100 RBIs, 100 hits and 100 runs as a batter in a single season.

Ohtani pitched six inning against the Blue Jays on Thursday, giving up five runs on six hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk. At the plate, he picked up one RBI on two plate appearances, a fielder's choice forceout in the third inning.
