Netflix officially announced there will be a second season of the hit series “Squid Game” (2021) on Monday.

The streaming platform uploaded an image on its social media accounts featuring a message, in Korean and English, from the series’ director Hwang Dong-hyuk.

“A new game begins,” the image reads. The image is designed after the business card from the show that invites people to participate in the Squid Game.

“And now, Gi-hun returns,” Hwang wrote. “The Front Man returns [...] The man in the suit with ddakji [folded paper] might be back. You'll also be introduced to Young-hee's boyfriend, Cheol-su.”

Gi-hun, portrayed by actor Lee Jung-jae, was the final winner of Squid Game in the first season. The Front Man, played by actor Lee Byung-hun, is a mysterious figure that oversees the deadly games. The formally dressed recruiter for Squid Game was played by actor Gong Yoo.

Young-hee is a giant motion-detecting robot doll in the shape of a little girl in the series. Cheol-su is a common old-fashioned boy’s name often used in tandem with the name Young-hee.

“We will be meeting you with even newer games and astonishing stories,” Hwang continued.

The director also thanked viewers all around the world for their support.

“It took 12 years to bring the first season of 'Squid Game' to life last year. But it took 12 days for ‘Squid Game’ to become the most popular Netflix series ever.”

The production schedule has not been announced, but Hwang previously told foreign news outlets that he is aiming to release season two by Halloween of 2024.
