Marriage is a business for the ambitious in the upcoming Netflix drama “Remarriage & Desires.”

Starring actors Kim Hee-seon, Lee Hyun-wook, Jung Eugene, Park Hoon and Cha Ji-yeon, “Remarriage & Desires” revolves around members of an exclusive agency where women strive to marry the most desirable bachelor, portrayed by Lee, and enter into the highest echelon of society.

Lead actor Kim portrays a widow and single mother who plots revenge against her late husband’s scheming mistress, portrayed by Jung, who she meets at the matchmaking agency. Park plays a rather naïve member of the matchmaking agency who still believes in pure love, and Cha plays the director of the agency.

During the press conference for the drama at Crest72 in Jung District, central Seoul, on Wednesday, Kim said that she decided to join the cast of “Remarriage & Desires” because of the universality of the drama’s main subject.

“Many people desire to marry a good person,” she said. “I think that this story of modern marriage taps into these desires and I think it would be one that everyone around the world can sympathize with and enjoy.”

She emphasized that the upcoming series deals with an institution, however, that is uniquely Korean.

“I was told that matchmaking services and agencies that rank people based on aspects like their finances, family or physical looks are only offered in Korea,” said Kim. “I thought that this setting could be interesting and somewhat of a fantasy for people outside Korea.”

She continued to say that the drama engages the audience with relatable emotions. "Judging others based on simply looks or their money is certainly morally questionable, yet something that many people are prone to doing. Maybe after our drama, matchmaking services like the ones in Korea will pop up in other places around the world!"

According to the cast of "Remarriage & Desires," the series has invented a new kind of drama that spans through various genres.

"It is a kind of drama that Netflix Korea hasn't seen before," said Kim. "The show deals with marriage, but what it is really about is people's innermost desires and their hearts."

"I want our series to show that Netflix can make this kind of complex show," added Lee. "There have been many genres that Netflix Korea has made, but I anticipate that 'Remarriages & Desires' will feel especially new and fresh to viewers."

"Remarriages & Desires" premieres on Netflix on Friday.
