Novel comics are webtoons based on original web novels. It is a new kind of online content created in 2016, as the webtoon industry was developing in Korea. Production companies and platforms prefer novel comics because web novels have existing readers and creating webtoons based on the novels is less likely to fail.

As novel comics are based on web novels, the webtoons inevitably have to follow the popular web novel genres. The success formula in the web novel industry is regression, possession (by a spirit) and reincarnation. The web novel “Debut or Die,” popular among teens these days, is a story that deals with possession. The protagonist, studying for a civil exam for four years, is possessed by the spirit of an aspiring idol and becomes a popular idol. Since “Debut or Die” began its webtoon series in August, it has gotten more than 3 million views a day.

Regression, possession and reincarnation is not just a trend in Korea. Since the 2010s, comics about “another world” started to pour out from Japan. In “Uncle from Another World,” the protagonist, an ordinary man, moves to another world and becomes a hero. Whether the story is about regression, possession and reincarnation or another world, it is essentially a fantasy. The young generation has a strong tendency of finding refuge from reality in fantasy and seeking vicarious satisfaction from cartoon characters.

The webtoon industry is concerned that as popular webtoons are concentrated on a specific genre, drawing styles become similar and the number of “original” works decrease. I am not saying the fantasy genre is bad. “Four Daughters of Armian,” a manga by Shin Il-sook published in 1986, is set in the fictional kingdom of Armian, where only women can be enthroned. The series features strong female characters that could hardly be found in romance comics at the time. The manga series pioneered a new female narrative. At first, the publisher recommended Shin draw a “modern story” as usual. “If I had a hit in the past, I would go for something safe. In the end, the publisher let me do as I wish, and I could work on it,” said Shin.

If you only revisit webtoons on certain days of the week and only read the most popular ones, you may not even know if there are better works on other days. It is also the responsibility of webtoon readers to encourage webtoon writers and the pioneering spirit of the webtoon industry.

회빙환〈回憑還〉

노블 코믹스. ‘고귀한(noble)’ 말고 ‘소설(novel)’과 연재만화를 가리키는 코믹스(comic)가 결합한 단어다. 웹소설 원작의 웹툰이 바로 노블 코믹스다. 한국에서 웹툰 산업이 발달하면서 2016년 이후 새롭게 생겨난 콘텐트 유형이다. 제작사와 플랫폼이 노블 코믹스를 선호하는 건 웹소설로 기존 독자층을 확보하고 있어 웹툰으로 만들어도 실패할 가능성이 작기 때문이다.

웹소설이 기반이면 아무래도 웹소설의 인기 장르를 웹툰이 따라갈 수밖에 없다. 회귀·빙의·환생의 앞글자를 딴, 이른바 ‘회빙환(回憑還)’은 웹소설계 성공 공식이다. 최근 10대 사이에서 인기를 끌고 있는 웹소설 ‘데뷔 못하면 죽는 병걸림(데못죽)’은 대표적인 빙의물이다. 4년차 공시생인 주인공이 아이돌 지망생에 빙의된 후 인기 아이돌로 거듭나는 과정을 그린다. 현재 누적 조회 수가 3억 회에 육박한다. ‘데못죽’은 지난 8월 웹툰 연재를 시작한 지 하루 만에 조회수 300만 회를 돌파했다.

‘회빙환’은 한국만의 유행이 아니다. 2010년대부터 일본에선 ‘이세카이(いせかい)’를 다룬 만화가 쏟아졌다. 평범한 주인공이 ‘이세계(異世界)’로 이동해 영웅적인 존재가 되는 내용이다. 회빙환이든 이세계든 넓게 보면 판타지다. 젊은 세대가 판타지를 현실 도피처로 삼고, 만화 속 주인공에게서 대리만족을 추구하는 경향이 강해진 탓이다.

인기작이 특정 장르에 편중되면 그림체가 비슷해지고 ‘오리지널(original)’ 작품 수는 줄어들게 된다는 게 웹툰 업계의 고민이다. 판타지물이 무조건 나쁘다는 건 아니다. 1986년 출간된 만화가 신일숙의 『아르미안의 네 딸들』은 여성만 왕위에 오르는 가상왕국 ‘아르미안’이 배경이다. 이전 순정만화에서 보기 힘든 강인한 여성상을 등장시켜 새로운 여성 서사를 개척했다는 평가를 받는다. 그도 처음엔 출판사로부터 “현대물을 그리는 게 어떻겠냐”는 권유를 받았다고 한다. “그전에 히트를 친 작가였으면 안정되게 가자고 했을 텐데 결국은 ‘알아서 해보라’고 해서 그 작품을 제가 할 수 있었다”는 게 그의 설명이다.

특정 요일에만 찾아가서 인기작 위주 웹툰을 읽다 보면 정작 다른 요일에 더 좋은 작품이 있는지조차 모를 수 있다. 웹툰 업계의 개척자 정신을 격려하고 웹툰 작가들에게 용기를 북돋워 주는 것도 웹툰 독자의 책무다.
