Korean businesspeople commemorated the second anniversary of the passing of Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Kun-hee on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony was held at a family burial site in Suwon, Gyeonggi, with family members of the late business leader present. Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, the eldest son, Hong Ra-hee, wife of Lee Kun-hee, and two daughters, Lee Boo-jin and Lee Seo-hyun, attended.

Hanwha Chairman Kim Seung-youn came to the site with his three sons.

About 260 former and current executives remembered the patriarch, who died at 78 in 2020 after being hospitalized following a heart attack in 2014. The executives present include Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Han Jong-hee and former Vice Chairmen Kwon Oh-hyun and Yoon Boo-keun, and they joined a luncheon with Lee Jae-yong following the memorial ceremony.

Lee Kun-hee, who transformed Samsung from an obscure trading company into a big name in semiconductors and consumer electronic products, is considered one of the most important figures in postwar Korean history.

The commemoration came as Korean press reports that Lee Jae-yong might be named chairman of Samsung Electronics.

In Korea, chairman is a symbolic title distinct from chairman of the board, which is a board position requiring shareholder approval.

Samsung Electronics is scheduled to convene a board meeting on Oct. 27.
