The two-day 2022 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA), which saw this year’s hottest K-pop acts take home honors, came to a close on Nov. 30.
The location for both days was the Kyocera Dome Osaka in Osaka, Japan. The first day saw stars be presented with mostly fans' choice awards. The second day of the ceremony was hosted by actor Park Bo-gum.
Girl group Ive, which debuted in late 2021, swept the night – receiving awards for Best New Female Artist, Best Dance Performance Female Group and Song of the Year with its megahit “Love Dive” released in April.
“Thank you so much for your love and support toward ‘Eleven,’ ‘Love Dive’ and ‘After Like,’" said member Jang Won-young, referring to the group’s three-in-a-row hit songs of this year.
The award for Best Hip Hop and Urban Music went to rapper Jay Park; Best Male Artist to trot singer Lim Young-Woong; Best Female Artist to Nayeon of girl group Twice; Global Music Trend Leader to rapper Zico; Breakout Producer to Min Hee-jin, the creative director behind rookie girl group New Jeans; Best Band Performance to Xdinary Heroes; Best Dance Performance Male Group to Seventeen; Most Popular Group to Stray Kids; Best Dance Performance Solo to PSY; Best Collaboration to PSY and Suga of BTS for their hit duet "That That"; Best OST to Melomance's “Love, Maybe” from the SBS series “Business Proposal” (2022) and Best Music Video to Blackpink's "Pink Venom.”
Boy band BTS showed that its popularity is unwavering, even after announcing a break from its group activities. It took home Best Male Group, MAMA Platinum, Album of the Year to for its anthology album “Proof” released in June and Artist of the Year.
J-Hope of BTS, who won Most Popular Male Artist this year and performed his solo numbers “More,” “Arson” and “Future” on stage Wednesday, delivered an acceptance speech on behalf of the whole band.
“"We wish all seven of us were here," he said. "For BTS, 2022 was full of challenges, adversities and efforts to overcome them," J-Hope said. "Each of the members are continuing to grow. Please send support to their individual journeys."
J-Hope also surprised the crowd during the speech by calling his bandmate Jin, set to enlist for his mandatory military service on Dec. 13, on the phone and putting him on loudspeaker.
"I'll go serve in the military well and come back!" Jin said via the call.
Wednesday’s ceremony featured performances from boy bands Enhypen, Tempest and Treasure, as well as from Japanese idol groups INI and NiziU. K-pop artists — such as rock band Jaurim and girl group (G)I-DLE, which won Favorite Female Group — joined forces for a collaborative performance.
