Fortress S, a sequel to the Korean-made online artillery game Fortress will be released on the Nintendo Switch game console on April 27, the publisher Daewon Media Game Lab said Wednesday.

Fortress is a turn-based game where each player, as a tank, aims to shoot down another player's tank while avoiding shots from other players, turn by turn. Players can choose from a different range of weapons and tools, with the desired trajectory and power of the weapons.

The new entry will include both a single-player campaign and local multiplayer modes supporting up to four players.

Single-player modes will include a campaign story mode, in which “users will be able to go on a journey, collecting 29 different types of tanks on the way” said the publisher. Unlike the other Fortress games based on a turn-based system, the new single-player campaign will feature a real-time system according to the publisher.

Local multiplayer modes will include a battle mode and a classic mode with the turn-based system familiar to existing players.

However, there will be no support for online multiplayer, unlike other entries in the franchise.

The history of the franchise dates back to 1997, with Fortress 1 released by Netsgo, a subsidiary company under SK Telecom. However, the franchise only gained popularity with its sequel, Fortress 2 in 1999, released by the same developers under the new name, CCR. With the service lasting for over two decades until its shutdown in 2020, Fortress 2 became a nationwide hit online game, garnering the title of the “nation’s favorite game.”

Currently, two mobile games based on the franchise, Fortress M and Fortress Battle Royale released in 2018 and 2019 are in service, with the PC sequel Fortress V2 ending its service on March 22, after mediocre receptions and server issues.

The virtual reality version of the franchise, VR Fortress is also currently under development by a different developer, Aiitone, which plans to start its global beta testing on Friday.

The game will be released for both online download and physical package, priced at 29,800 won ($23) and 39,800 won respectively.
