Glossy chocolate hemispheres with splashy colors are a dime a dozen these days, but the bonbons at Seoul’s newest candy shop, Stick With Me Sweets, are raising the bar for local candies with style that won't outshine substance.

화려한 컬러에 광택이 나는 반구 모양의 봉봉 초콜릿은 이제 흔하디 흔하지만 서울에 새로 생긴 초콜릿 가게 스틱 윗미스위츠의 봉봉은 안에 들어가는 고급진 재료를 무색케하지 않는 자신만의 스타일로 국내 많은 수제 초콜릿 가게들의 기준을 높이고 있다.

One of New York City’s most recognizable candy shops, Stick With Me Sweets was founded in 2014 by Korean-American chocolatier Susanna Yoon, and last month, it opened its second-ever store in Apgujeong-dong, an upscale neighborhood in Gangnam District, southern Seoul.

뉴욕시에서 가장 유명한 초콜릿 가게 중 하나가 된 스틱윗미스위츠는 한국계 미국인 쇼콜라티에 수잔나 윤이 2014년에 시작했고 지난달 강남구의 부촌인 압구정동에 두번째 매장을 열었다.

Hand-painted sophisticated designs containing components of the bonbons and scenes from nature cover the whisper-thin chocolate exteriors. A pleasantly snappy bite reveals dainty confections infused with ingredients like lime, matcha or sesame seed as well as more classic sea salt caramel or gianduja hazelnut fillings.

봉봉은 속 재료나 자연의 풍경을 세련된 디자인으로 표현해 초콜릿의 부서질 듯이 얇은 겉 표면에 손으로 그린다. 기분 좋게 툭 부서지는 한 입을 깨물고 나면 라임, 말차 또는 참깨, 또는 조금 더 고전적인 씨솔트나 캐러멜, 지안두야 헤이즐넛과 같은 속이 등장한다.

The most impressive element, however, is the chocolates’ particular warm, jovial essence. The taste, look and packaging combined is almost a given delight at any day. And that is exactly what Stick With Me’s Yoon strives for her sweets to be.

그러나 가장 인상적인 요소는 초콜릿 특유의 따뜻하고 쾌활하기도 한 초콜릿 에센스다. 맛, 모양, 패키징이 어우러져 언제나 기쁨을 선사하는 것이 윤씨가 스틱윗미의 달콤한 제품들을 통해 얻고자 하는 것이라고 한다.

“You are absolutely welcome to come to the store and get just one bonbon. Maybe on a bad day, you can just have this one bite, and if it makes that person happy, well, that's the reason why we are here!” Yoon told the Korea JoongAng Daily during an interview in April. A single bonbon is 3,800 won ($3). A box of 6 is 31,000 won, 12 is 56,000 won, 24 is 98,000 won and 54 is 210,000 won.

지난 4월 코리아중앙데일리와 한 인터뷰에서 윤씨는 “가게에 오셔서 봉봉 하나만 사셔도 좋아요. 기분이 좋지않은 날 이 봉봉 한 입이 그 사람을 행복하게 만들어 줄 수 있다면 그게 우리가 여기 있는 이유”라고 말했다. 봉봉 1개 가격은 3800원. 6개가 들어있는 한 박스는 3만1000원, 12개는 5만6000원, 24개는 9만8000원, 54개는 21만원이다.

“We believe in the power of love and connection,” she continued. “The name 'Stick With Me' represents our mission of creating handcrafted chocolates that inspire people to share and say 'Stick with me!' with the special people in their lives.”

그는 “우린 사랑과 연결의 힘을 믿는다”면서 “스틱윗미라는 브랜드 이름 또한 사람들이 그들의 삶에서 특별한 사람들과 공유하고 ‘제 곁에 있어 주세요’라고 말할 수 있는, 그런 영감을 주는 수제 초콜릿을 만드는 우리의 사명을 나타내고 있다고 전했다.

Yoon was visibly excited and slightly nervous to be back in Korea after 15 years to realize her longawaited dream of opening Stick With Me Sweets in her birth country.
