A compilation of Korean Basketball League free throws has gone viral this week after a coach in the United States noticed that KBL players’ reliance on bank shots has produced an unusually high free throw success rate.

미국의 한 농구 코치가 KBL 선수들의 뱅크슛 의존도가 남달리 높은 자유투 성공률을 만들어 냈다는 점을 주목하면서 KBL 자유투 모음집이 금주 화제로 떠올랐다.

Eric Fawcett, a basketball coach who works as a consultant for a number of college basketball teams, originally posted the clip, accumulating over 3.4 million views as of press time.

여러 대학 농구팀의 자문위원으로 활동하는 에릭 포셋 코치는 해당 영상을 먼저 올렸고 보도 시간 기준으로 340만 누적 조회수를 기록했다.

“Interesting trend from the Korean Basketball League where a number of players are 80%+ from the free throw line shooting exclusively bank shots,” Fawcett said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

포셋은 X (이전 트위터) 게시물에 “KBL에는 많은 선수가 80% 이상 프리 스로 라인에서 오직 자유투만 던지는 흥미로운 추세가 있다,” 라고 했다.

A bank shot is a shot into the basket made by rebounding the ball off the backboard. In the KBL it is a common way to take a free throw — essentially the basketball equivalent of a penalty — while in the NBA, players tend to shoot directly for the basket.

뱅크슛은 백보드를 맞고 다시 튀어나온 공이 골대로 들어가게끔 쏘는 슛이다. KBL에서는 자유투(농구에서의 페널티와 같다)를 넣는 흔한 방식이나 NBA 선수들은 골대에 직접 슛을 하는 경향이 있다.

Fawcett’s initial post was followed by a long analysis piece — “A Viral Clip From the Korean Basketball League Could Change the World” — from Tom Haberstroh at Slate, including quotes from basketball professor Larry M. Silverberg, who’s extensive study of bank shot free throws has found that they require more strength and are therefore less successful over the long term.

포셋이 처음 올린 게시물에 뒤이어 긴 분석 글이 등장했다. 미국 웹진 슬레이트의 톰 하버스트로흐는 “KBL 화제영상이 세상을 바꿀 수도 있다” 라는 제목의 게시물을 게재했고 여기에 그는 농구 교수 래리 M. 실버버그의 말을 인용했다. 실버버그 교수의 광범위한 자유투 연구에 의하면 자유투는 더 많은 힘을 요구하기에 장기적으로 성공할 확률이 낮다고 한다.

In reality, league stats suggest that the KBL free throw success rate is actually lower than in the NBA.

실제로는 리그 기록을 봤을 때 KBL 자유투 성공률이 사실 NBA보다 낮다.

In recent years, the NBA has had a free throw success rate hovering around the 75 percent. The KBL, meanwhile, had a league free throw success rate at 72.9 percent last season. Over in the NBA, Tyler Herro of the Miami Heat led the league last season with a free throw percentage at 93.4 percent.

최근 몇 년을 놓고 보면 NBA 자유투 성공률은 75%를 맴돌았다. 반면 KBL 지난 시즌 자유투 성공률은 72.9%였다. 마이애미 히트의 타일러 헤로는 지난 시즌 NBA에서 자유투 성공률 93.4%로 리그 1위였다.

In the KBL, meanwhile, Lee Dae-sung, who now plays for SeaHorses Mikawa in Japan but spent last season with the Daegu Kogas Pegasus, led the league with 86.8 percent, followed by Heo Ung of KCC Egis with 84.7 percent and Yang Hong-seok, who now plays for the Changwon LG Sakers but spent last season with the Suwon KT Sonicboom, with 84.5 percent.

한편 KBL에서는 이대성이 (현재 일본 팀 시호스 미카와 소속이지만 지난 시즌 대구 한국가스공사 페가수스에서 뛰었다) 86.8%로 자유투 성공률 1위였고, KCC이지스의 허웅이 84.7%로 뒤를 이었다. 현재 창원 LG 세이커스 소속이지만 지난 시즌 수원 KT 소닉붐에서 뛴 양홍석은 84.5%를 기록했다.
