North Gyeongsang to offer fully-funded scholarship to int'l graduate STEM students

North Gyeongsang created a fully-funded scholarship for international students studying science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in the province.

The province announced Wednesday that four universities — Pohang University of Science and Technology, Kumoh National Institute of Technology, Andong National University and Daegu University — were selected as host institutions for the new scholarship.

The scholarship is named the K-Global Korea Scholarship (K-GKS), although it is different than the government-funded GKS organized by the National Institute for International Education.

The K-GKS will fund students applying for master's and doctorate programs in STEM fields at the four selected schools.

Scholarship recipients will take Korean language classes for a year, later starting their degree programs. Full scholarships will be offered, along with living stipends.

The scholarship focuses on attracting international talent to North Gyeongsang, and the recipients will need to work at a company in the province for three years after completing their degree. Students are also allowed to continue their studies through an advanced program at a university in the province.

The scholarship will be offered to 10 students from each university this year.

The first batch of scholars will be selected among those applying for the fall 2024 semester. The universities will select scholarship recipients, which will be announced in May.
