AI-generated images spark uproar over Korean gender stereotypes and grievances

Online controversy is brewing over a set of AIgenerated viral images that some internet users argue reinforce gender stereotypes about young Korean men and women.

이미지 생성 인공지능 (AI)이 만들었다는 화제의 이미지들이 한국 젊은 남녀에 대한 성 고정관념을 강화한다는 논란이 온라인에서 일고 있다.

A pair of images titled “Korean men and women drawn by AI” were posted in an online forum last Friday. The striking differences between the men and women in the images sparked the debate.

지난 금요일 한 온라인 커뮤니티엔 “AI가 그린 한국 남녀”라는 제목의 이미지 두 장이 게시됐다. 이미지 속에서 극단적으로 다른 남녀의 모습은 논쟁을 촉발했다.

In the first image, four Korean women enjoy themselves in a cafe while dozens of Korean men undergo military training in the snow. The second image echoed this theme. Men in military uniforms hold guns with glum expressions while their female counterparts laugh in a cafe.

첫 번째 이미지에선 많은 남성들이 눈 속에서 군사 훈련을 받고 있는 동안 카페에서 즐거운 시간을 보내는 한국 여성 4명의 모습이 그려졌다. 두 번째 이미지는 첫 이미지와 같은 주제를 반복했다. 군복을 입은 남성들은 침울한 표정으로 총을 들고 있고, 같은 시간 여성들은 카페에서 웃고 있다.

Some internet users said the images “simply reflected reality” and asked what all the hubbub was about. Others fired back, saying the images were deliberately created based on specific prompts or keywords to reflect certain gender grievances.

일부 네티즌들은 “단순히 현실을 반영했다”고 적고 야단법석 떠는 건 새삼스러운 것 아니냐고 반문했다. 또 다른 네티즌들은 이미지가 특정 명령어나 키워드를 통해 의도적으로 남녀갈등을 반영해 만들어진 것이라고 반격했다.

They argue AI can produce such images only when it receives detailed queries such as, “Draw dejected Korean men wearing military uniforms and smiling Korean women sitting in a cafe chatting,”

이들은 AI가 이런 이미지를 생성하려면 ‘군복을 입은 낙담한 표정의 한국 남성들과 카페에서 담소를 나누며 웃고 있는 한국 여성들을 그려달라’는 상세한 명령어를 입력해야만 가능하다고 주장했다.

According to local media outlet MoneyToday’s report on Friday, AI-based image generators Wrtn and Rasgo AI did not deliver images like the ones that went viral. The reporter asked the AI services to draw “a group portrait of Korean men and women in their 20s.”

지난 금요일 현지 언론 머니투데이의 보도에 따르면 '뤼튼'(Wrtn)이나 '라스코AI' 과 같은 이미지 생성 AI 서비스는 화제가 된 이미지와 비슷한 결과를 내놓지 않았다. 이 매체의 기자는 AI 서비스에 '20대 한국 남녀의 모습'을 그리라고 요구했다.

Wrtn’s images showed Korean men and women standing together in everyday clothing. The images did not depict a particular background, such as a cafe or a military encampment. Rasgo’s images were also far from polarizing. One cartoonish image showed a man and two women on the street. The other depicted well-dressed men and women in formal suits.
