BTS's 'Spring Day' goes Platinum in Japan

BTS’s spring season hit “Spring Day” (2017) reached another streaming milestone in Japan, right on cue with the season’s warmer days.

“Spring Day” was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for reaching 100 million streams in February, according to the association on Thursday.

A song is given a certification for streaming by the RIAJ when it exceeds a certain number. Gold, Platinum and Diamond certifications are given for 50 million, 100 million, and 500 million times, respectively. It is based on streaming data from 12 music service platforms available in Japan, and does not include music video streams.

“Spring Day,” the lead track from the band’s repackage album “You Never Walk Alone” (2017), is an alternative hip-hop song with electro sounds made in the style of the Brit rock genre. It has continued to chart on multiple rankings even years after its release in February 2017.

It landed at No. 1 on Billboard’s World Digital Song Sales chart last December after some BTS members enlisted in the military. In Japan, the song topped Oricon’s daily digital single rankings on December 12.

The song is BTS’s 15th track to be certified Platinum by the RIAJ, following other mega hits such as “Dynamite,” “Butter” and “Permission to Dance.”

Other K-pop tracks that reached the 100 million streaming landmark in February are ITZY’s “Wannabe” (2020), Twice’s “Celebrate” (2022) and Stray Kids’ “Case 143” (2022).

BTS’s “Black Swan” (2020) and Blackpink’s “As If It’s Your Last” (2017) were certified Gold by the RIAJ for reaching 50 million streams.
