Burger King Korea announced that it is suspending sales of its iconic Whopper hamburger after 40 years in what is suspected to be a buzz marketing campaign before the fast food giant introduces the renewed version of its iconic burger.

"Burger King is discontinuing the sale of the Whopper after 40 years," Burger King Korea stated in a notice posted on its website and other online platforms on Monday morning. "We thank everyone who has loved the Whopper all these years. Meet the last Whopper over the next week."

The Whopper, known for its flame-grilled 100-percent beef patty, has been Burger King's flagship menu item, and was introduced in Korea at the Jongno branch in Seoul in 1984.

While specific reasons for the discontinuation were not provided, the news caused confusion among users, with some even mistaking it for an April Fool's Day prank.

The announcement, initially shared with users registered on the burger franchise's KakaoTalk Plus Channel, quickly garnered reactions across various online platforms, with its mobile app experiencing temporary connection issues. Some stores in Korea saw a surge of inquiries and a rush to use Whopper coupons in response to the discontinuation notice.

In the afternoon, Burger King Korea updated its website notice to hint at the burger's upcoming renewal.

"It is true that we are discontinuing sales of the Whopper," the notice read. "We ask for your anticipation for various promotions we are preparing for the 40th anniversary of the Whopper," adding that existing coupons and gift cards would remain valid.

Burger King Korea has yet to clarify for reason for the "halt" of sales and whether the Whopper's renewal will be implemented globally.

Online speculation suggested that the updated Whopper may feature added sesame seeds and a seasoning mix of salt and pepper in the patty.
