From Lassie to Ssambo: Pet stars trigger emotions

Until last month, Ssambo, better known as Jeombak-e, was working like, well, like a dog. Starring in the SBS TV soap opera “War of Money” as the main character’s friend, he spent every day absorbed in doggie acting.

‘점박이’라는 예명으로 더 잘 알려진 개 ‘쌈보’는 지난 달 까지 말 그대로 ‘개’처럼 일했다. SBS 드라마 ‘쩐의 전쟁’에서 주인공의 친구 역할로 출연한 쌈보는 매일 매일 ‘개’의 연기를 하며 지냈다.

Here’s a typical workday for a dog actor:
On the day of his shooting, Ssambo wakes at 8 in the morning and works out by running around a field for 20 minutes. Breakfast is served by his trainer and after the meal, he received a shower to keep neat and tidy.

개 연기자의 전형적인 하루 일과를 보자:
촬영날이면 쌈보는 아침 8시에 일어나 마당을 20분 정도 뛰면서 몸을 추스린다. 조련사가 주는 아침 식사를 한 뒤 쌈보는 깨끗하고 깔끔한 몸 매무새를 위해 샤워를 한다.

After getting his “makeup” on, Ssambo’s trainer places him in a replica of his set for the day ― for example, if the scene involves going down a slide on the playground, he practices on a similar slide. This kind of rehearsal makes the dog more comfortable during the actual shoot.

makeup : 얼굴단장, 화장: (배역의) 분장
replica : 사본, 복제, 똑 같은 것.
rehearsal : (연극, 음악 등의) 리허설, 사전 연습

조련사는 쌈보의 분장을 마친 뒤 당일 촬영장과 비슷한 상황을 갖춘 곳으로 쌈보를 데려 간다. 예를 들어, 그 날 촬영할 내용이 놀이터에서 미끄럼틀을 타는 것이라면 쌈보는 비슷한 미끄럼틀에서 연습을 한다. 이렇게 사전 연습을 하면 쌈보는 실제 촬영 현장에서 편안하게 연기를 할 수 있다.

When arriving at the filming area, Ssambo and his trainer warm up by walking around the unfamiliar area to become comfortable with other actors.
Finally, when the director gives the signal, Ssambo begins acting ― with his eyes.
“Dogs have emotions, too,” claims Cho Sung-jin, the pet’s owner and head of the Korean Dog Training School in Bundang, Gyeonggi.
“They smile by snuffling their nose, lifting their lips or moving their ears,” Cho said. “Some express themselves by wagging their tail or lying down.”

촬영장에 도착한 쌈보와 조련사는 낯선 촬영장 주변을 산책하면서 다른 배우들과 친숙해 진다. 마침내 감독이 신호를 보내면 쌈보는 스스로 연기를 한다.
쌈보의 주인이자 경기도 분당의 한국 애견훈련소 대표인 조성진씨는 “개도 감정이 있다”고 말한다. 그는 “개들은 코를 킁킁거리거나 입술을 들어올리고 귀를 움직이는 동작으로 미소를 표현한다”며 “어떤 개들은 꼬리를 흔들거나 드러 눕는 것으로 자신의 감정을 표현한다”고 말했다.

Ssambo is a three-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier, and he is a pet star in Korea.
He played an important role in “War of Money” by consoling the main character, as his best friend. Viewers were moved by his performance and he gained stardom, reaching No. 1 as the most frequently searched name in Naver, one of Korea’s largest Internet portal sites.

세살 난 아메리칸 핏불 테리어종인 쌈보는 한국의 애완동물 스타다. 쌈보는 ‘쩐의 전쟁’에서 주인공의 가장 친한 친구로 그를 위로하는 중요한 역할을 맡았다. 시청자들은 쌈보의 연기에 반했고 쌈보의 인기는 높아졌다. 쌈보는 한국 최대의 인터넷 포털 ‘네이버’에서 검색 순위 1위에 오르기도 했다.
