■ 아하! Broken English

난 저 탤런트가 참 좋더라.

같은 배우라도, 텔레비전에 나오는 배우는 ‘탤런트’라고 하고 영화나 연극을 하는 배우는 ‘배우’라고 흔히 부르고 있죠? 물론, 연기하는 사람들을 통틀어 ‘연기자’ 또는 ‘배우’라고 하기도 하지만요. 영어로는 actor, actress라고 부릅니다. 탤런트, 즉 영어로 talent는 ‘재능’이라는 뜻입니다.

■ 영어로 뭐예요?
네가 정곡을 찔렀네.

Man Do you agree with me?
Woman Yes. You hit the nail on the head.

남자 내 말에 동의해?
여자 응. 네가 정곡을 찔렀네.

You hit the nail on the head.

어떤 말이 ‘정곡을 찔렀다’는 것은 마치 못을 박을 때 못의 한가운데를 탁 때리는 것에 비유할 수 있겠죠. 그래서 ‘정곡을 찔렀다’라고 할 때 hit the nail on the head라고 합니다. 물론 여기서 head는 못의 머리를 가리키죠.
