New Covid-19 infections soared past 7,000 for the first time Wednesday, signaling that the pandemic's fourth wave is only getting worse, with the number of critically ill patients also reaching a record high.

코로나19 신규 확진자가 수요일 처음으로 7000명을 넘어섰다. 위중증 환자도 역대 최다를 기록해 코로나19 4차 유행이 점점 더 악화하고 있는 것처럼 보인다.

“The spread of Covid-19 is fierce, given that average daily confirmed patients exceeded 5,000 last week and today’s cases surpassed 7,000,” Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum said in a virus response meeting Wednesday.

김부겸 국무총리는 수요일 코로나19 대응회의에서 “코로나19 확산이 거세다. 지난주 일일 평균 신규 확진자가 5,000명을 넘었었는데, 오늘 신규 확진자는 7,000명을 넘어섰다.”고 말했다.

According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), the country reported 7,175 fresh Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, a huge jump from 4,954 the day before. All but 33 were locally transmitted, bringing the total caseload to 489,484. The previous record was 5,352 set on Dec. 4.

질병관리청에 따르면, 수요일 코로나19 신규 확진자는 7,175명이다. 전날 신규 확진자 4,954명 보다 크게 증가한 것이다. 이 가운데 33명은 해외 유입이고, 나머지는 국내 발생이다. 현재까지 코로나19 누적 감염자는 총 48만9,484명이다. 이전 최다 신규 확진자는 12월 4일 기록한 5,352명이다.

Coronavirus figures tend to peak on Wednesdays or Thursdays as testing centers conduct more tests after the weekend.

주말 지나서 더 많은 검사를 하기 때문에 코로나19 신규 확진자 통계는 수요일이나 목요일에 절정에 달한다.

Health authorities believe the current wave of the pandemic isn’t “stagnant or reduced," but is "continuing to grow,” leading to the significant increase of Wednesday’s cases.

보건당국은 코로나19 팬데믹은 정체되거나 줄어든 게 아니고 계속 증가하고 있어 수요일 신규 확진자 급증으로 나타났다고 판단하고 있다.

Korea added two more Omicron cases on Wednesday, with the total variant caseload coming to 38 since the reporting of the first cases on Dec. 1. However, officials dismissed the possibility of the new Omicron variant being the reason for Wednesday's spike, saying the country is in the “early stages of the Omicron infl ux.”

오미크론 변이 감염은 수요일 2건 추가 발생해 12월 1일 첫 발생 이후 모두 38건이 됐다. 그러나 보건당국은 오미크론 변이 바이러스 유입 초기이기 때문에 오미크론 변이가 수요일 코로나19 신규 확진자 급증의 원인일 가능성은 배제했다.
