'Squid Game' receives Emmy nomination for outstanding drama series

Netflix's dystopian hit "Squid Game" (2021) is the first non-English language series to be nominated for the outstanding drama series category in the Emmy Awards.

 
The nominations were announced Tuesday by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS), which hosts the awards show.
 
The other nominees for the category are "Better Call Saul," "Yellowjackets," "Ozark," "Euphoria," "Stranger Things," "Severance" and "Succession."
 
"Squid Game" picked up 14 nominations among 13 categories for the Emmys, with four of them given to the main cast.
 
Actor Lee Jung-jae, who played protagonist Gi-hun, is nominated for lead actor, Park Hae-soo and Oh Young-soo for supporting actor and Hoyeon (or Jung Ho-yeon) for supporting actress.
 
Park played Sang-woo, who was Gi-hun's former classmate, and Oh was the elderly contestant Il-nam. Hoyeon played the North Korean defector Sae-byeok.
 
Actor Lee You-mi was nominated for the guest actress category for her role as Ji-yeong.
 
It is also the cast members' first time to be nominated for their respective categories.
 
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk is nominated for drama writing and directing, and the rest of the nominations were given to production design, cinematography, special effects, editing, main title theme and stunt performance.
 
The Emmy Awards ceremony will be held on Sept. 12.
