Horror film “Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum” (2018) has been adapted into a new content format called “chat novel,” according to Kakao Entertainment and film distributor Showbox on Monday.
Kakao Entertainment formed a partnership with Showbox to launch the chat novel on its mobile content platform KakaoPage from Thursday.
A chat novel is short-form content told from a first-person perspective, where viewers become participants of social media live broadcasts or members of a chatroom for an immersive experience.
The original film revolved around a crew who traveled to an abandoned asylum for a live broadcast for fame and publicity. The film was deemed a commercial success as it sold more than 2.7 million tickets.
Kakao Entertainment is planning to release spin-off chat novels based on each of seven protogonists of the crew in the film.
Kakao and Showbox will collaborate together to adapt 2022 film “In Our Prime” into a chat novel as well.
