X races to contain damage after Elon Musk endorses antisemitic post Less than 24 hours after Elon Musk endorsed an antisemitic post on X as “the actual truth” of what Jewish people were doing, IBM paused its advertising on the social media platform as X’s CEO, Linda Yaccarino, and others at the company scrambled Thursday to contain the fallout.

X employees said Thursday they had gotten calls from advertisers wondering why Musk was making comments seen as antisemitic and why their ads were showing up next to white nationalist and Nazi content, according to internal messages viewed by The New York Times. IBM cut off about $1 million in advertising spending it had committed to the platform for the last three months of the year, the messages said.

In a note to employees Thursday, Yaccarino said “X is a platform for everyone” and added that “discrimination by everyone should STOP across the board.” She said the company had been clear about its work to fight antisemitism and discrimination, and later shared a similar message on X.

In a statement, IBM said it “has zero tolerance for hate speech and discrimination and we have immediately suspended all advertising on X while we investigate this entirely unacceptable situation.”

The Financial Times earlier reported on IBM’s pause in advertising on X.

Musk, who bought Twitter last year and renamed it X, has faced increasing criticism that he has tolerated and even encouraged antisemitic abuse on his social media platform. He has attacked George Soros, a financier who is a frequent target of antisemitic abuse, and threatened to sue the Anti-Defamation League, a rights group that has highlighted the rise in antisemitism on X.

On Wednesday, Musk agreed with a post from an X account accusing Jewish communities of pushing “hatred against whites that they claim to want people to stop using against them.” Jewish people were now “coming to the disturbing realization that those hordes of minorities that support flooding their country don’t exactly like them too much,” the account added.

“You have said the actual truth,” Musk replied to the post.

Jewish groups have compared the statement that Musk endorsed to the “Great Replacement Theory,” the far-right idea that minorities are replacing white European populations.

“It is the deadliest antisemitic conspiracy theory in modern U.S. history,” the American Jewish Committee, a U.S.-based Israel advocacy group, wrote on X on Thursday. “To amplify it on @X is incredibly dangerous.”

뉴욕타임스가 입수한 16일(현지 시간)의 X 직원간 내부 메시지에 따르면 광고주들로부터 머스크가 왜 반유대주의적인 코멘트를 하는 지와 왜 자신들의 광고가 백인 우월주의자와 나치 추종자 메시지 옆에 나타나는 지를 묻는 항의 전화가 X 직원들에게 빗발치고 있다고 한다. IBM이 100만 달러(약 12억9600만원)에 달하는 올해 마지막 석달치 X 광고 집행을 끊었다는 내용도 내부 메시지에 포함돼 있다.

내부 직원들에게 16일 보낸 메시지에서 야카리노는 “X는 모든 이를 위한 플랫폼”이라며 “누가 하든지에 상관없이 모든 차별은 멈춰야 한다”고 적었다. 그는 회사가 그간 반유대주의와 차별에 반대하는 입장을 분명히 해왔다고 내부 메시지에 적었고, 이후 비슷한 내용을 X에도 올렸다.

IBM은 성명서에서 “우리는 혐오 스피치와 차별에 대해 무관용 원칙을 갖고 있다”면서 “이 받아들일 수 없는 상황에 대해 완전한 조사가 끝날 때까지 X에 대한 모든 광고 집행을 멈춘다”고 밝혔다. IBM의 X 광고 중단은 파이낸셜타임스(FT) 보도로 알려졌다.

머스크는 지난해 트위터를 사들여 X로 이름을 바꾼바 있다. 그가 자신의 소셜 미디어인 X를 통해 반유대주의를 허용하고, 심지어는 장려하고 있다는 비판이 계속 제기돼 왔다. 머스크는 종종 반유대주의 혐오 발언의 표적이 돼 온 투자가 조지 소로스를 공개적으로 공격하기도 했다. 또한 X에서 반유대주의가 극성을 부리고 있다고 지적한 인권단체 반명예훼손연맹(ADL)을 고소하겠다고 협박하기도 했다.

머스크는 15일 “유대인 공동체가 자신들에 대한 증오를 멈춰야 한다고 주장하면서 백인들에 대해선 그런 증오를 부추기고 있다”고 적은 한 X 계정 글에 ‘동의’표시를 눌렀다. 또 “당신은 사실을 말하고 있다”는 댓글도 달았다.

유대인 공동체들은 머스크가 동의한 이 문장에 대해 소수민족이 유럽 민족을 대체하고 있다는 극우주의적 아이디어에 필적하는 차별 발언이라고 비판한다. 미국에 있는 이스라엘 지지 단체 미국유대인위원회(AJC)는 X에 “이런 주장은 미국 현대사에 유례를 찾을 수 없는 반유대주의 음모론”이라며 “이를 X가 확대 재생산하는 것은 극히 위험한 일”이라고 적었다.
