Two firefighters were found dead Thursday after responding to a fire at a meat processing factory in Mungyeong, North Gyeongsang.

경상북도 문경의 한 육가공 공장에서 발생한 화재 대응을 위해 출동한 소방관 2명이 목요일 (2월 1일) 숨진 채 발견됐다.

The fire authorities recovered the bodies of 27-year-old Kim Su-kwang and 35-year-old Park Su-hoon, who were stranded during the rescue and extinguishing operations.

소방 당국은 구조 및 진화 작업 중 고립됐던 김수광(27)과 박수훈(35)의 시신을 수습했다.

The authorities discovered their bodies on the third floor of the building. The two were only five to seven meters (16 to 22 feet) apart from each other. However, the bodies were found more than three hours apart. The first firefighter was discovered at 12:21 a.m., while the second firefighter was located at 3:55 a.m.

당국은 두 시신을 건물 3층에서 발견했다. 두 사람은 서로에게서 5~7m(16~22 피트) 떨어져 있었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 시신은 3시간 간격을 두고 발견됐다. 첫 번째 소방관은 오전 12시 21분에 발견됐지만 두 번째 소방관은 오전 3시 55분에 발견됐다.

The fire department said they struggled to find the deceased firefighters due to debris and structural frames piling up around them.

소방청은 숨진 소방관들 주변에 잔해와 구조물이 쌓이면서 이들을 찾는데 어려움이 있었다고 밝혔다.

As the bodies had been badly damaged, the authorities will run DNA tests to confirm their identities.

시신들이 심하게 훼손돼 있어 당국은 DNA 검사를 진행해 이들의 신원을 확인할 예정이다.

“The two [dead] firefighters were in the same uniforms," said Bae Jong-hyuck, the head of the Mungyeong Fire Station. "At this point we couldn't confirm their identities."

배종혁 문경소방서장은 “두 소방관이 똑같은 제복을 입고 있었다” 라며 “현재로서는 신원을 확인할 수 없었다”고 말했다.

The two firefighters were part of a four-man search and rescue team when they became isolated from the fire.

The fire broke out around 7:47 p.m. on Wednesday at the four-story building. The firefighters arrived 10 minutes later.

화재는 전날인 수요일 오후 7시 47분께 4층짜리 건물에서 발생했다. 소방대원들은 현장에 10분 후 도착했다.

Of the five employees evacuated from the fire, one received medical treatment at the hospital for smoke inhalation.

화재로부터 대피한 직원 5명 중 1명은 연기 흡입으로 병원에서 치료를 받고 있다.

President Yoon Suk Yeol ordered the National Fire Agency “to use all viable options and equipment to save troubled firefighters” after being informed about the situation.

윤석열 대통령은 상황에 대한 보고를 받은 뒤 소방청에 “어려움에 처한 소방대원의 구조에 가능한 모든 수단과 장비를 총동원하라”고 지시했다.

Gyeongbuk Fire Service Headquarters has announced its intention to not only request posthumous promotions for the firefighters but also to recommend medals for their exemplary service.

경북소방본부는 이들 소방관의 사후 승진 및 모범적인 근무에 대한 훈장을 추천할 계획이다.

Additionally, the fire department is set to request that the government grant a burial at the national cemetery for the two fallen firefighters.

소방당국은 또한 순직한 소방관들의 국립묘지 안장을 정부에 요청할 예정이다.

Bae, the superior of the deceased firefighters, struggled to hold back tears as he briefed reporters on the discovery of the bodies. "The firefighters who sacrificed their lives did their best in searching for survivors and battling the fire," Bae said.

숨진 소방관들의 상사인 배 서장은 울음을 삼키며 시신 발견 소식을 기자들에게 전했다. 그는 “ 목숨을 잃고 희생된 대원들은 생존자 수색과 화재 진압에 최선을 다했다”고 말했다.
