Oasis Announces Reunion Tour After 15 Years of Brotherly War

In the list of rock bands considered least likely to bury their hatchets long enough to successfully reunite, British group Oasis has always been near the very top.

At its peak in the 1990s, Oasis ? led by brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher ? exemplified the soaring appeal of Britpop, with anthemic hits such as “Wonderwall,” “Live Forever” and “Champagne Supernova”. In 1994, the group’s debut, “Definitely Maybe,” rocketed to the top of the British pop chart and became a zeitgeist-defining moment for a new wave of English rock.

But the band kept crashing down to earth, largely through the fisticuffs ? verbal and physical ? of the Gallagher brothers. In 1995, a 14-minute unofficial CD was released of Noel and Liam Gallagher getting sidetracked during a journalist’s interview to bicker.

The band split up in 2009 ? “I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer,” Noel Gallagher said at the time ? and over the years the Gallaghers have continued to lob public insults at each other.

Now they seem to have reconciled sufficiently to announce a comeback tour in summer 2025, which is to include shows throughout Britain and Ireland, including at least four nights at Wembley Stadium in London. The band announced the tour on its website. In a statement, the band said plans were underway for dates on “other continents outside of Europe later next year.”

Tickets for the shows go on sale Aug. 31.

In Britain, Oasis was a phenomenon, selling tens of millions of albums and racking up six Brit Awards, and the Gallagher brothers’ antics guaranteed constant coverage in the news media. But the band never scaled the same heights in the United States.

Oasis has never won a Grammy Award. This year it was nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for the first time but was not inducted.

This week, Oasis is set to release a 30th-anniversary edition of its debut album, “Definitely Maybe,” including early tracks that the band had long considered lost.

감정의 골이 너무 깊어 재결성이 절대 안 될 것으로 예상되는 록밴드 목록에서 영국의 오아시스는 늘 상위권이었다.

리암과 노엘 갤러거 형제가 이끄는 오아시스는 1990년대 전성기, ‘원더월’, ‘리브 포에버’, 그리고 ‘샴페인 슈퍼노바’와 같은 마음을 흔드는 히트곡을 내며 점점 더 인기를 얻어가던 브릿팝의 매력을 잘 보여주는 표본이었다. 이들은 1994년 데뷔곡 ‘데피니틀리 메이비’로 영국 팝차트 정상에 올라 새로운 브릿록의 결정적 순간을 만든 시대정신으로 떠올랐다.

하지만 주로 갤러거 형제의 언어적, 신체적 난투극을 통해 밴드는 지속적으로 곤두박질쳤다. 1995년 노엘과 리암 갤러거는 14분짜리 비공식 앨범을 공개했는데, 언론 인터뷰 중 방향을 잃고 서로 다퉜다.

밴드는 2009년 해체했다. 노엘 갤러거는 당시 “그냥 리암과는 단 하루도 더 함께할 수 없다”고 말했다. 이후 수년 간 갤러거 형제는 서로에게 공개적으로 모욕적인 말을 주고받아왔다.

현재는 2025년 여름 컴백 투어를 발표할 정도로 충분히 화해한 것으로 보인다. 이 투어는 영국과 아일랜드 각지에서 열리며 런던 웸블리 스타디움 공연도 최소 4회 이상 포함됐다. 밴드는 공연 소식을 자신들의 홈페이지를 통해 발표했다. 보도 자료에 밴드는 ”내년 말 유럽 밖의 다른 대륙“에서 공연 일정을 잡는 계획이 진행 중이라고 밝혔다. 공연 티켓 판매는 8월 31일 시작된다.

영국에서 오아시스는 하나의 현상이었다. 음반 수백만 장을 팔았고, 브릿 어워즈 6개를 수상했다. 갤러거 형제의 익살스러운 면은 늘 언론에서 다뤄졌다. 하지만 미국에선 이런 위치에 오른 적이 없다.

오아시스는 한 번도 그래미상을 받지 못했다. 올해 처음으로 미국 로큰롤 명예의 전당 후보에 올랐지만, 실현되진 않았다.

이번 주 오아시스는 결성 30주년을 맞아 데뷔 음반 ‘데피니틀리 메이비’의 기념판을 발매할 예정이다. 신보엔 밴드 멤버들도 오래전 사라진 것으로 간주했던 초기 곡이 포함돼 있다.
